It's something we don't really talk about, but YouTube and platforms like it are a temporary thing, and that includes the the content that is hosted on the platform. The industry itself has become a massive bubble just waiting to pop, combine this with the heavy hand of censorship that's been becoming more stringent on the platform, and others like it, and it seems inevitable that YouTube as a platform will cease to exist within, I'd guess, ten years or so. With more and more of its' content being purged until it's unrecognizable.

My faggotry aside, there's shit on YouTube everyone on this website likes to watch, or used to watch. If the website were gone tomorrow, what would you preserve today, lest it be lost to the ether? What is worth the hard-drive space to you on YouTube?

Political videos, animations, sperg out moments, historical channels, movie reviews, music, etc?

1. Jim's full videos on lolcows. A good testament to the lunacy of the Internet
2. Mauler's full critique of the Last Jedi. A good testament of the biggest SW shitshow after the prequels
3. Finally, all the videos of Down The Rabbit Hole. They're very good research on the most obscure parts of the Internet
4. Maybe the Pokemon Battle Royale Animations. They're so over-the-top that are worth to save it

I waste plenty of time on youtube but I wouldn't call anything I've watched there timeless. Some channels would be missed, but not enough to be worth seriously archiving for the ages or anything gay like that.

Most of it is flash in the pan stuff no one will care about two years after it's posted.

The rest is often stuff that has been posted other places and has been archived to death.

So youtube-dl what you don't want to lose and (unless you have petabytes of storage for yourself) fuck the rest. You won't miss it until you need to totally pwn somebody by showing them what UncleAdolfBBQ1469 actually said about climate change in 2012 for some reason.

Except the stuff your cows do. Archive all of that shit. Nail those people to the fucking cross. Learn how to archive everything. I can't stress this enough.

YouTube wont be shut down, but it will become useless and left by the wayside due to the opportunity for having a YouTube "career" being lost to all but marxist vloggers/propaganda, Nickelodeon rejects, and makeup tutorial channels.

What’s sad is I can’t remember what they were.

On my favorites list, I see about 1/5th of my list as “deleted” or “private video” now to avoid a third strike against their account.

But I can’t even remember what those videos were. Sure, I liked them, I put them in my favorites for a reason. But I had so many and now so many are gone, and I expect many more to follow.

It makes me sad honestly.

Only thing that truly interests me on youtube me are the rare soundtracks on there, but I already have all the rare soundtracks YouTube has to offer downloaded. Including soundtracks from old shows and movies that were never released officially. So I'm good. Only rare thing of value I don't have from there are rare commercials but I don't think rare commercials are worth drive space even if they are entertaining. I've also downloaded the Emperor Text-to-Speech series, so I'm good there too. Last thing I'm downloading are all of E;R's videos.

2. Mauler's full critique of the Last Jedi.
Now that you mention it, thanks for reminding me. I think I might just do the same and download Mauler's critical breakdowns of TFA and TLJ along with those by Hackfraudmedia and Left Foot Media. And maybe the Rebels critique by Cosmonaut and the vids of Mark Hamill and Ackbar's actor dissing Disney.

YouTube has a lot of how-to videos made by random people out there for specific, obscure things that could disappear at any time. You can't back all that up, you never know what you'll wanna look up in the future.

Then there are channels I like to watch with just colossal amounts of content, all of it kind of the same. Ashens has 773 videos right now. I guess I could take a week off, buy a new hard drive, and manually back up over a hundred videos a day, and hope I don't get a repetitive stress injury from doing the same thing 773 times in a row.

Not to mention, even if you went out and bought a 10TB HDD and started backing up everything you like, how many gigabytes would be burned on lengthy Patreon credits sequences and padded-out outros, due to YouTube's retarded way of encouraging quantity over quality?

It’s weird to think there are adults out there that grew up on YouTube.

Oh, dude, today's kids are gonna be up a creek when they get older and start getting nostalgic for whatever random streamer they liked as a child, only to find all of their streams are loooooooooooooong gone, and nobody backed them up because nobody wanted to archive hundreds of hours of a guy screaming at Fortcraft. Combine that with the popularity of mobile games with kids, and all that shit is gonna be gone when they grow up. Sad!
