Purchasing a laptop -

Hey everyone! I am looking to buy a new laptop for gaming. I also just got an elgato capture card which has some system requirements for both PC and Mac.

Mac: OS X 10.7 or later, 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU

PC: Windows 7 or later, 2.0 GHz dual core CPU, sound card

(I believe this is for both): 4 GB RAM, built in USB port

I'm trying to compare both PC and Mac, but I also want to find a good laptop for gaming as well. What should I look for when wanting to buy a good gaming laptop?

For gaming you're going to want a PC with more than 2.0 ghz and at least a quad core CPU.

It largely depends on what kinds of games you want to be playing. But you're going to want at least 3.0 to 3.5 ideally.

After that you're going to want a good GPU and a good mobo.

With laptops generally you're going to spend more than you would with a desktop computer. Mostly because you can assemble the desktop computer yourself, and find the parts separately very cheaply. With a laptop it comes preassembled and there's a lot of other factors you have to consider. Such as:

Battery life
Build quality
Fan
Size/weight

You can get a generally good gaming laptop that has a shitty battery life and will drain itself completely in an hour if you try and play Skyrim unplugged. Likewise you can find a laptop that has a shitty fan and will get sticky/hot and overheat regularly. And you can also find a laptop that has everything you're looking for but weighs a crapton.

Just remember that laptops generally you have to spend more and you cannot upgrade them. So keep that in mind before you buy.

Also, forget about Mac if you want to game.

PCs are better for gaming needs, and many programs are incompatible with mac. Fia is switching over to a PC because her mac sucks.

Yeah in terms of gaming your selection with Mac becomes much much less. Very few games comparatively get released for Mac platforms. The only devs I know of that consistently do are ones like Valve and CDProjekt, and it's usually just to advertise their platforms (Steam and GoG respectively). However a great many games do get ported unofficially to Mac (Dos games, games with source codes that get released, etc.) but it's almost always games that are more than 10 years old.

Although if you only plan to play like 5 games I don't fault a person for buying a Mac. I do like it's user interface and a handful of it's programs. But if you plan to be spending more than the average on a computer you might as well get a PC.

I'm not saying this to be a dick or start any laptop vs pc vs mac vs windows crap but if you want a dedicated gaming machine a windows desktop is your best bet.

If you're looking for something a bit more portable then a small case with a micro atx motherboard, I5 processor and a Nvidia 660ti or similar will get you performance equal to virtually any gaming laptop out there for a fraction of the price.

So the i5 intel core is good for gaming?

Yeah, an i5 is all you need for gaming, as said above you need a 3 ghz or better quad if you want to game well. Granted if all you play is WoW then don't worry but if you want actually good games you need a quad core. I know battlefield 4 recommends it.
