Quarantine Reading -

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

Since the Vast Majority of us are bunkering down from Corona I figured i might as well start a thread about what everyone's been reading

Finally got around to reading Michelle Remembers, a book that I've had owned for a few years now, but never actually read. The book itself is partially responsible for kicking off the Satanic Panic of the 80s, and why it got as crazy as it did. It was later proven to be an obvious hoax, but I like it anyways.

Something I find very interesting is that the titular Michelle has fallen into more obscurity than the actual book, because I can't find anything on her nowadays, or what happened to her after her memoir was proven to be a hoax.

House of Leaves.

I kept hearing about it online so I decided to get it for myself. I really like the premise of two stories intertwined with each other and the narrative itself is engaging, although I find it difficult to read if I'm not in the right state of mind.

I've also been reading the official Lovecraft collection. So far my favorite stories have to be The Outsider, The Lurking Fear, The Shunned House, Cool Air and The Colour Out of Space.

I left my copy at work before I was furloughed and now I'm not allowed in the building to retrieve it, RIP.

Still, I don't think it'd make the best reading for a quarantine given the subject of the framed story. Sort of like reading The Shining when you're housesitting.

Heidegger's Being and Time St Augustine's Confessions. Might as well do some contemplative thinking now that I have more than enough time to do so.

I’m about halfway through Sweet Adversity by Donald Newlove, about drunken conjoined twins who spend years aspiring to be musicians, but somehow never find any free time between drinks to actually, you know, practice their playing.

I'm giving the audiobook of Raymond Chandlers "the big sleep" a go and it really spices it up.

Well, I WANTED to check out some books from the university library, but it's CLOSED for PLAGUE

So it looks like I'm either going to have to start Blood Meridian, Lonesome Dove, or buy a digital book. I'm not in the mood for Blood Meridian right now and Lonesome Dove is really, really long (I've also started it about five times and never gotten very far in, not because I don't like it, but because it's so dense). And I don't particularly want to buy anything...

A friend of mine started the year out reading a bunch of McCarthy’s work. After COVID hit, they moved onto lighter works.

Been re-reading the Dragonriders of Pern series. It’s been, oh, about 20 years since I read the whole thing.

It’s kind of hilarious at how, if they were written in “Current Year”, the author would’ve been cancelled so hard.
