For the last time, I was talking about low-skill service jobs like burger-flippers and cashiers. You hit the nail on the head. A former colleague of mine actually posted a lot on r/antiwork recently. They have a Master’s Degree and was unemployed for the past four years. Didn’t help that they went back to school right after undergrad too, so they had little to no connections with prospective employers right after it was finished.

During that time, they also somehow managed to afford rent in one of the most expensive cities in the US and spend a decent amount of money on impulse purchases (e.g. drugs, pets, video games, nice clothes, etc.). I later found out that they received a “allowance” from their parents every month.

They also claim to be a victim of physical and sexual abuse from family and friends, which their entire “manifesto” may be a response to. They certainly weren’t “sheltered” in the example quoted above, but I do think that they are more privileged then they make themselves to be and have a hard time reconciling that reality with their failings.

Trauma will fuck everyone up in some way, but there are certainly healthy methods to deal with it. This is not one of them and it will not be sustainable when their radicalism escalates to toxicity and outright discrimination.

I do think a lot of these people face genuine hardship, but it isn’t as bad as they make it out to be, and they utterly fail at helping themselves.

In the west the cost of living is skyrocketing while unskilled labor is becoming less valuable by the year. Nobody gives a shit about middle age losers with no talents, skills or connections, living paycheck to paycheck as the food they eat sets them up for health problems later in life which they can’t afford the treatment for.

Yet at the same time the amount of things you can take advantage of in the modern, western world are uncountable. You can find healthy food for cheap. If you’re willing to bust your ass you can break into a field with decent pay without needing to spend tens of thousands on a bachelors degree. You can learn almost anything online. Even if you’re homeless without a penny to your name you can find shelter/food and even medical care assuming you’re not a meth zombie.

If these people were desperate they would be talking about eating and working a third job to pay for their debts, instead of shitty managers and proudly declaring how they quit their job to stick it to them.

While a lot of the things they complain about legitimately suck their “solution” is to double down and become an antisocial doomer who hyper focuses on their own problems and bitches on Reddit about how victimized they are instead of doing anything to improve their lives IRL. On one hand antiwork is petty, harmless and the sentiment has a lot going for it because of how terrible the job market has become (if you’re too low IQ or unlucky to have a strategic professional life and to have marketable skills), but its also infecting numerous young, gullible people with an attitude which will only make things worse.

Of course, but the thing about this is that it doesn't really come down to education or the skills you have, it's how much agency you have in your job along with how replaceable you are.

You can go to med school and become an emergency medicine MD and then work for Envision. Guess what? You might make $300k a year but they will absolutely grind you into dust because there are more EM MDs than available job openings.

Ultimately a good job is one where you have some agency. Good jobs and bad jobs exist across the entire spectrum, but if you're performing unskilled work you'll basically never get that.

Like 10 years ago people were talking about how kids now growing up with so much information and access to tech would be savants that would displace all the older people in the workplace in a second but nah, turns out even with all the information available and for free there´s still pleb filters, people don't just log into Matrix and learn 5 languages botany, how to code, trade crypto, kung fu and how to be a sushi chef all at the same time before they turn 20 just because the tutorials and supplements are online for free.

Realistically being really good at just one thing could improve some average joe's life inmensely but in the presence of an overwhelming amount of options a lot of people will just freeze up and choke under pressure, in a way all the information is becoming more of a burden than a boon, lots of young people suffer from FOMO, lack of focus and really warped expectations, even if they are doing okay, what even is the standard to be "just fine" anymore? too many tangents and options to compare yourself too, the colective has not yet adjusted to deal with this, it doesn't help that information warfare is a constant and demoralization tactics in the youth are happening everytime everywhere , it creates disease, you shoudn't shit were you eat, i think the internet feels like that sometimes, a dirty place everyone uses to shit and eat at the same times.

No need for advanced theories here, those people support """sex work""" simply because they're part of an ever expanding group that you can either agree with 100% or you're branded a heretic.
There's no logical process behind it, just a cost-benefit analysis.
