BeautyGuruChatter is a subreddit that was brought to our attention in the ThriftThick thread due to their part in the drama surrounding her being accused of Racism. She is one of the sub's biggest topics alongside Jeffrey Starr. Instead of just being catty about and mocking crazy cat ladies like Cassie and pompous douches like Jeff they mask themselves as some righteous crusaders calling people out for offending their personal sensibilities.

They have an entire thread prefix for Call Out posts. And one for Drama.

As expected, the sub is pretty heavy on circlejerking. Up until recently a chick called Tati was like goddess to them who could do no wrong. But then she collabed with J* and things hit the shitter and they hated her for her white privilege and racism, as well as brushing them off.

In more Tati drama she has been purging the comments sections on her social media.

Take a glance at most of the top drama threads and you'll see that it's all Cassie/ThriftThick, J* and Tati shit presently, and all of it is complaining about how racist Tati and Cassie supposedly are based on guilt-by-association with Jeff or some other randos.

I wasn't familiar with this particular part of reddit yet but I've been told in DMs that there's a deeper history of shit actually going down on the actual sub itself, and related subs.

Oh I actually lurked this sub for awhile when I got interested in the youtube drama community. It use to be r/Beautygurugossip I think. A lot of shit went down a couple months ago when the main mod suddenly began deleting post and banning other mods. Eventually, she kicked out everyone and made the sub private. They moved to this one and it's basically been about shit talking anyone who associates with J*, Manny MUA, and calling out people who use craft glitter in their tutorials since then.

My bad, it was r/BGC. They created this one to get away from the drama of the old one, but it looks like they can't escape their old ways...

Beauty gurus are very serious business you guys.

It's a weird sub. They're super PC about gurus they like, but then they savage the ones they don't, and there is a massive amount of groupthink. You can actually watch them turn on certain gurus en masse. They used to love Cassie, and the deciding they hated her happened gradually, way before this newest drama. Same for Tati. I don't think anyone ever liked Jeffree or Jaclyn.

Good God, this sub can be pretty insane for even me to take. There's nothing wrong with discussing about the lack of dark/deep skin shades for foundation (I'm horrified by it) or even blatant racism (especially from Jeffree), but I get so annoyed with the constant bitching about white people and privilege from that sub. And God forbid if you tell anyone you don't care about hearing it in a makeup sub...

Does anyone else remember the Chanel boomerang fiasco where everyone accused J* of Aboriginal cultural appropriation even though it's a common ass children's toy in the United States and Australian Aboriginal issues aren't really talked about here (for obvious reasons)... I'm fairly sure that 99% of people here don't know its origin (I sure didn't until I read the /r/BeautyGuruChatter threads lmao). IMO the topic should have been focused on "J* is the definition of new money, is tacky as hell, and is a dumbass for throwing $2k at a designer boomerang" lol.

Also, I'm sure the Aborigines' biggest concern is boomerang appropriation, and not widespread extreme poverty or anything :')

EDIT: some gems from that thread

Did you know that if anything makes you feel bad, you ought to compare it to the 2016 American election, no matter how irrelevant it is!

TIL that "Not Australian = American" lol. Also, did you guys know that now it's important for every American student to learn the nuances of every Pee Oh See culture, no matter how small?

Also how far does "respect other peoples cultures" go? Just wondering when/if a line is drawn. :)

As an Australian who reads the news I can guarantee that "a lot" of Indigenous people don't give a single flying fuck about cultural appropriation of boomerangs. Completely unusable decorative boomerangs are sold in tacky tourist shops everywhere in Australia. This isn't America, people here don't get uppity about cultural appropriation en masse.

It's interesting how there's been this increasing backlash against Tati all over youtube and in communities like this. It used to be that drama channels held her up as a positive example and now she's collaborated with J she is dead to so many of them.

They're like a school of fish. They sense the turn and everyone joins in.

The thing that amuses me the most about the whole situation is that these same people are always bitching about how BGs should act professionally and treat YouTube like a job, since this is how they make money. So here's Tati, including people who are popular and generate views in her videos, ostensibly to increase her subscriber count and grow her business, and they're all pissed because she's associating with people they find "problematic". Like she should be more worried about courting the good opinion of people who have proven themselves to be fickle and prone to groupthink than pulling in views from people who have proven their brand loyalty by being Jeffree Star stans.

Thanks for posting this OP!

I remember someone theorised that the reason they hate Cassie so much is because she reminds them of themselves - that probably has at least a grain of truth to it. But it's ridiculous how quickly they turn on someone and dedicated themselves to picking on every single "flaw".
Like, someone posts a video of Cassie's latest video wanting to discuss the content? Well, we can't miss a chance to "drag her" can we.

Personally, I'm excited for day they turn on Jackie Aina.

Yeah I totally get complaining about the lack of products for non-white skintones, and the pale princesses who go on about how they're discriminated for their porcelain skin annoy the shit out of me too. But some of the reddit beauty community has gone the other way, and crucifies anyone for even mentioning that they're fair, when it's actually relevant.

I would like to see that, but I doubt it honestly. But who knows?

It got so bad on this reddit and /r/MakeUpAddiction there's an actual reddit for the discussion of makeup for pale skin -- /r/PaleMUA.

iirc, /r/PaleMUA was created a brown girl who was fed up of seeing a million "I'm so pale nothing works for me" threads a day.
It makes sense for it to exist though. There's /r/brownbeauty, /r/olivemua and stuff, so why not one specifically for fair skin?

And I doubt they'll turn on Jackie anytime soon too, because they seem hesitant to say anything negative about "WOC", but they can turn on a dime so it may happen. I've heard she's done some sketchy stuff in the past, like begging for donation money for school and then using it to fund extravagent holidays, but I don't know how true it is. Either way, if Jackie develops a hatedom it'll make for some good drama - better than Cassie drama, where everyone involved just ends up looking pathetic.

I personally like Jackie Aina, but it would be interesting for someone to dig up her past.

I'll admit that Cassie got on my nerves after a while, but I think a lot of the stuff they drag on her about is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, Cassie's pretty annoying, but the hate she gets is disproportional to her badness, so I just end up feeling kinda sorry for her. And I used to like Jackie, but she's been annoying me more and more for the past year or so - it's petty af I'll freely admit, but I'd like to see her get taken down a peg.

We encourage pettiness here in The Beauty Parlour. We're women. For most of the history of mankind, our petty grudges were all we had to keep us warm.

Okay, I need to rant or I'll probably implode.

The subject of my current rant is the second paragraph of this post regarding child labor in developing countries (also that comment thread in general):
e847d4ab-e4eb-44a1-b7a6-94b4eef36340
a0rwz7A.png

And since I have many things I want to bring up, I think I'll just bullet my points:
  • The people in India and southeast Asia aren't suffering because they're """POC""", they're suffering because they unfortunately live in corrupt third world countries- and yes, while colonialism has affected those countries negatively (at least historically), but it's honestly really fucking naïve to assign one cause (the evil 'ol white man) to the myriad of issues in South Asia.
  • As people who are lucky enough to live in developed countries, we have a different world view than the people living in those aforementioned places. I wish that they had decent labor laws, and I wish their governments gave a damn about their people. However, they don't and while it sucks, it's life. I get that many of the people on /r/BGC are idealists (and in the worst possible way), but stop acting like outsourcing factory jobs and shit aren't overall benefiting people in those countries. Yes, the working conditions and pay are usually shit. However, it's the best chance many people in the world are able to get.
  • Again, child labor is terrible and I wish every child could have the same opportunities that I've had in the United States to get a guaranteed primary and secondary education. The sad truth is that the kids who are working are poor. They are living in squalor and their families need to be able to feed them, and often times primary and secondary education are too expensive, too inaccessible, or both*. There are so many issues surrounding the poverty in those countries, but """casual racism""" isn't one.
  • Hell, the people enforcing shitty work standards in those countries ARE Pee Oh See. The funny thing is that, hey, maybe, I dunno, classism is the biggest force at play here? (though I think it's worth noting that ethnic minorities in that part of the world experience their fair share of problems and prejudice, but that also doesn't align with the typical American concept of racism)
* :powerlevel:
my parents sponsor a little girl's (age 7) education in India through a non-profit which a relative has worked with- that little girl lives in complete poverty in a small village (afaik), and while the $24/month that my parents pay to help her have an education is a meal of fast food for four that we get many nights a week, it's something that that little girl's family can't afford. You can't blame that on "casual racism"... you can blame that on oft unattainable educational opportunities and the true lack of social mobility for some people.

EDIT: Honestly this post was kinda overkill, but as someone who who has spent a good amount of time researching the history and modern issues of a certain southeast Asian country :powerlevel:(Cambodia specifically, though I've learned a decent bit about political issues in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and China during the late 20th century as well):powerlevel:, the oversimplification of this shit pisses me off.

Agreed.
Like, apart from the concentration of melanin in their skin, what does a middle class brown person from the US have in common with a lower class Indian kid? But they'll never miss a chance to condemn thers in their crusade against "racism". And they're pretty ignorant of the world in general

I'm not sure I have the screenshots anymore, but there was a ridiculous thread about Jefree and (I think?) Manny cancelling a trip to Tanzania after realising being gay was illegal there, full of people completely shocked that in a lot of countries in the world, many of them in Africa, homosexuality is indeed illegal. What kind of bubble do these people live in that this is news to them? And then calling people homophobes for saying that they should have looked up this shit before booking the trip, and also racists for implying that African countries in general have a problem in homophobia.
Don't forget that the sub fucking hates J*, yet this is the point they need to defend him fro ~~homophobes~~.
