im into the sort of niche genre of racing games. so forza, assetto corsa, need for speed, etc. though i lean more towards arcade style racers over sim racers as i dont have one of those nice cockpit systems with the steering wheels and pedals and shifters and shit. im curious if there's anyone here who happens to be into racing games

I used to only play racing games, mostly simulation style. I got bored with them, but one that I played a bit recently is GRID. It's a pretty cool arcade style racer with a gimmick. You can rewind a few seconds back if you fuck up a turn or something. I haven't played it a lot, but I think it is fun.

Last one I played is 3 though, it's been a while. I'd like to get one of those really nice racing wheels and try to play one of the newer ones but they're quite expensive.

Racing games are one of those things where I'll get an itch to play one, I'll scratch that itch, and then just kinda forget about them for a while

Driveclub on PS4 scratched that itch at one point, then The Crew scratched it later on, and then I tried to play Project Cars and it lost me because I kept slamming into walls because I'm not used to realistic inertia at all

I'd like a fancy pants steering wheel too but the Logitech ones still cost a few C-notes and that's still too steep for something I'll probably not use for more than like 20 hours a year

I was never good at simulation racing games. I knew little about cars and the handling would be ridiculous at times.

Arcade racers like Need for Speed were my preferred choice. But why do they add a story to those games? How do you make a story into racing cars?

Can you tell me if it is possible to join online matchmaking and only do road races and not have to do the cancerous free-roam rush races in between every goddamn event? It was a fun game but I stopped because holy shit free-roam rush is a terrible mode.

I love the Gran Turismo franchise, and I'm not sure why you didn't mention it in the OP. Arcade physics are lame and make it feel pointless to get good at the game.

Sadly, the free-roams still pop-up. They're not what I look forward to during matchmaking, although I only do it for the 1 ranked game for placement for the season.

I have had a few in the past and found that the cheaper ones are a disappointing experience. I haven't cared about this stuff in close to 10 years so maybe the less expensive stuff has improved, but I found that you can't just go by the cost because I tried some of the more expensive sets at the time, and they weren't much better.
Like every purchase your best bet is to do some research first.

Logitech Driving Force GT is sub-$120 in the secondhand market. Has paddle shifters and a sequential shifter (I use the sequential as a handbrake.) No clutch, just gas/brake. Any setup with a clutch is minimum $150 secondhand and will probably go higher.

Don't have time for them now, but when I do get into racing-adjacent games, it's Dirt Rally 2.0 and Richard Burns Rally. I love rally games because the enjoyment comes from using knowledge of how the vehicles handle to improve stage times by tiny increments. You learn a bunch of stuff and then have to toss out most of what you learned when you switch from FWD to RWD or AWD. Tons of replay value. I recommend a wheel and pedal setup because it ends up becoming a kind of physical feat with all the weird shit you're doing input-wise and feels extremely immersive.

7 on the 3DS is really good and the one I've played the most (specifically for online multiplayer). Unfortunately the buttons on my 3DS decided to break on me, so if I want my Mario Kart fix, it'll have to be 64 on an emulator. My sister has 8 on the Switch, and it's pretty cool. Would be something I would own if I was desperate enough to get a Switch.

Regarding other racers, WipeOut and Wip3out on PS1 are games I've played constantly and are really fun. The soundtrack on those games are fucking amazing too. CoLD SToRAGE and DJ Sasha became my favorite artists because of those games.

Cruis'N World is another fun one. Playing Championship mode while getting enough points to upgrade your car and give it a new paint job is fun. Also as someone that live in NY, it does a somewhat decent job at representing it. The stage kinda looks like a certain part of Grand Central Parkway, but it could also be somewhere in the Brooklyn like the BQE near Sackett Street.

Also I'm probably the only one that unironically likes Sonic R... both the game and soundtrack.

+1 to the secondhand DFGT recommendation. I mostly use mine for ETS2 and wreckfest and it does well. I've heard that its force feedback is too slow for drifting but that's not my scene.

You can play MK8 on Wii U and that console is both easy to hack and cheap. Even online play is fine with pirated games on Wii U. It's also a solid machine for emulation. The harder to emulate Nintendo shit can be played natively on the exposed Wii interface (GC, N64), and you can use RetroArch or standalone emulators for other stuff.

F-Zero GX is my favourite racing game, but Gas Guzzlers Extreme was a close second. I got Wreckfest on sale recently, and that's really good.

GRID

Which one? There's been a few games with the GRID name. Same tracks, but differ in quality. The Xbox 360 game Race Driver: GRID was the best one. You manage your racing teammate, get sponsors, and work your way through 3 different racing trees.
