I think TERFs are this way because they truly hate men (for various reasons), and that hatred overwhelms their abilities to use critical thinking when it comes to feminism. Welcoming trans women, to them, is allowing men to take over their last refuge. Once a man, always a man, is the attitude, I guess. I can understand it to a point, but to hate trans people and teach your child bigotry is a whole other creature. She is a straight up man hater, not a real feminist. You can have issues allowing trans women into feminism and still be a decent person. There are good reasons to doubt the sincerity of someone who grew up with male privilege before transitioning. But this is not TEF, it's TERF, and the R makes a huge difference.

The "radical" part isn't what makes the difference. This woman is just a spastic bigot hyperfocusing on shit that doesn't really matter, like the vast majority of gender-critical feminists do.

OG second-wave feminists supported trans rights from day one, and I can pull excerpts to back this. They were also big on satirical and overblown man-hating rhetoric, which was about as genuine as A&H niggerdeath and largely intended to show women they could speak their mind and shrug off the backlash. Icons like Dworkin built their reputations on this ; being unapologetic and outspokenly hostile to men and refusing to back down, but at the end of the day she was still an open-minded and compassionate woman who went home to her husband and never shied away from associating with and befriending men, even men who were absolutely opposed to her political beliefs. It was a much needed example for women back in the days of boomer feminism.

Naturally, hateful and insane women ran with this and turned man-hating feminism cliches into a reality, so when opposition to trans rights first started to crop up from the political lesbian camps of radical feminism, their first impulse was to bust out some Dworkin-style rhetoric against trannies. It turns out when you talk smack against men everyone just rolls their eyes and indulgently pats you on the head because the vast majority of men are far too stable and secure in their lives and don't feel the slightest bit threatened by it. But when you try that shit against another marginalized demographic, all hell breaks loose in your far-left communist circles, and women who have spent years smugly circlejerking over 'kill all men' are suddenly losing their shit as they find out society doesn't just politely ignore them when they try 'kill all trannies' instead. Once the whole TERF thing blew up, their ranks started to swole up with boomer housewives reading too much breitbart, with right-winger tranny-haters, with libfems who got kicked out of their own circlejerks for disagreeing with a tranny, with A&H Kiwis who decided their hate of trannies outweighs their hate of women, etc. etc.

tl;dr Radical Feminism has many schools of thought, and the Gender-Critical side of it might be the most visible right now, but it's also the most hateful, idiotic, watered-down, and adulterated. Radical Feminism, as a movement, has always showed a uniquely feminine weakness when it comes to openly challenging fringe beliefs within the movement, and the image of the entire movement being dominated by screeching TERFs is the price we pay for that.
