I used to follow Regan religiously, because she of her athletic feats. Did she ever complete that Ironman?
Yes, she's also currently being photographed to appear on the cover of Sport Illustrated as athlete of the decade and made the USA Olympic decathlon team to compete in Tokyo this year.

Hahahaha no.
She decided on a 'self run no timed course' with a snack station manned by her girlfriend/now fiance. Then, over the last 6 months, has been undergoing back and neck and spine surgeries, which she attributes to an injury and a congenital condition needing attention. I'm no dr, so I don't know exactly the cause of her issues, but she's basically been unable to move much of her neck since then (and has refused treatment from any physical therapist who associates weight with joint pain), and all of her updates have been her ugly face in medical settings selfies, with that relentless potato grin.
Truly horrifying stuff. Definitely sooo close to being an Ironman, obvi

And I'm sure all the extra strain from her weight on her spine had nothing at all to do with the damage to her back. Clearly she just overexerted herself due to all the fatphobia.

Ragen, the clothing industry is all set to a standard cloth width of 72". The weaving and fabric machines all produce this width; the cutting tables all fit this width; the standard sizes have even constructed to get the maximum amount of pieces out of that width cloth with a minimum of wastage. This has always been the way, since the industrial revolution (the continuation of which is why clothing is now so cheap and affordable.)

When normal sizes are cut on that 72" table, they can get X number of pieces from it: two 2s, two 4s, two 6s, two 8s, and one or two 10s and 12s. They they repeat this very and over. The goal is to lay out the patterns for each is such a way that there is almost no wasted material, and this works well with standard sizes.

When someone tries to cut two 1Xs, 2Xs, 3Xs, etc - the same piece of cloth can't last a whole size run. The patterns themselves lead to more wasted pieces between the patterns; this is just the way the geometry of it works. So now where you were getting a whole run of multiples from one piece of cloth, you now need three or four pieces to make the same amount of clothing, with a lot more wasted cloth in between patterns that can't be used. So your production costs have tripled and your production rate is 30% of what it was before. You must increase the product price to make up for the losses.

I know math is hard when you're fat, but seriously how do they not understand this?

Back in the day on r/fatpeoplehate, someone familiar with tailoring gave an interesting sperg out on how you can simply make the pattern bigger in straight sizes. But obese people carry their weight so differently that there's no guarantee that an extra large straight-sized garment will fit because people carry large amounts of fat differently (think Chantel's egg shape vs Anna's candy juicies vs Amberlynn's tree trunk legs). Even designing plus size patterns is a totally different creature than designing for normal people.

Yeah, plus pattern making is a whole other expense besides the basics of how many pieces you can get out of the same size cloth. There are very few plus sized pattern makers, so all of them are in high demand. But even with the best plus size pattern maker in the world- of course they can't simply size up the normal patterns and those will magically fit all manner of fats. They try to cope for the most amount of typical fat problem areas and use materials with plenty of stretch to try and accommodate other fat abnormalities. Oh, and everything needs double reinforced stitching, so there's another hefty expense. But at the end of the day, no mass produced clothing item is going to fit and look good on all types of fat people. There's just too much variation.

There's also just no reason to accommodate them. For L/XL/maybe XXL, those sizes will be a decent chunk of a store's customer base. Even if the added fabric costs a few more dollars for an XXL compared to an M, raising prices to compensate is going to alienate a fairly large number of customers. Most stores are going to accept a smaller profit when the alternative is people simply not shopping there. But for 6XL or whatever Ragen is the profit margin is going to dip even more, and they are such a small share of customers that losing them won't really matter financially.

It's also a win for dedicated plus-size retailers; they can charge huge markups and get away with it if regular stores only go up to 2XL or 3XL.

I believe Ragen's position is that all sizes should be priced the same, with smaller sizes rightly subsidising higher sizes to make up for all the ways fatphobic society disadvantages fat people otherwise (she cites average lower income, less employability, less promotions, worse housing etc as fatphobic discrimination that takes place in society)- and phrases it as being like reparations from the thins. Seriously.

She milked the everliving shit out of her fat athlete schtick and there‘s not much else she can do. Despite training for longer than most athlete’ careers last, she can’t compete even at an amateur level. She performs worse than severely disabled competitors. She never even managed to succeed in a single Ironman event. Not even the whole thing. Just one event.

I think even her followers are not blind enough to ignore her many abysmal failures. Those people want a successful fatty, so they can convince themselves obesity doesn’t affect their lives. Ragen is the opposite of that. That’s why her career is over.

One of my favorite “hate watches” are clothing brands that bow down to the demands of super fats. The funniest ones are athletic gear (ie Outdoor Voices) because someone who needs a 4XL definitely spends time at the gym and hiking on weekends. An Instagram popular small-run brand I would like if they didn’t cater to fats and use the ugliest fat models (ie “non binary blobs”) ALWAYS has XS-XL sell out instantly when new lines drop. But what sizes are ALWAYS in stock for months on end? 2XL - 6XL.

I have an awesome handmade piece from a girl who’s also gotten quite popular since she now makes items for celebrities. She mostly repurposes vintage items and vintage fabrics, which limits the sizes she can sell. But, IMO, her shit is pretty inclusive already; I think she’s had stuff from a 23” waist to a 36” waist for sale. But OF COURSE in the last few months as her visibility has grown, fats have shown up in her IG comments throwing tantrums because she doesn’t make a 50” waist item and because her brand is “fatphobic” for using skinny models. She took to her page and BLASTED all these people and basically broke down why these demands were near impossible being a one-woman operation who uses dead stock items. I gained a lot more respect for her that day!!

Also seconded to inclusive athletic wear. Super Fit Hero and Universal Standard have CRAZY models, barely ambulatory, yet running gear. I believe J/ComfyFat Travels was a model for Super Fit Hero athletic gear briefly 🙃

That and didn't her mom basically gift her a rental property that she uses as passive income? I forget what the story is there but wasn't it that the entire time she was claiming to be a full time whatever that she was pretty much just a landlord of a triplex or something?

It's in this thread I think but my personal favorite Reagan moment was when she left a yelp review bitching about a greasy spoon place forgetting napkins or something in her delivery and the receipt was something like 5 hot dogs, a shitload of fries and the total for her and Julianne was like 50 bucks worth of hot dogs, fries and other greasy fried shit. Being fat is clearly genetics!

These same people are the ones who pretend to care about the environment and slave labor. If you're thoughtful about the brands you buy, you:
  1. make sure they're dedicated to using patterns the produce the least amount of cloth waste. It doesn't just save the company $, it makes sure the least amount of fabric scraps are headed to the dumpster
  2. investigate their manufacturing practices. There are a TON of companies that are recycling polyester, reducing the need for water in their cotton production, and using eco-friendly dyes (and disposing of those dyes properly)
  3. ensure they receive third party certification in their factories. Make sure someone is checking that the woman sewing for 12+hours isn't actually a 12 year old.
But no, these hags crow on and on about how much they "care" about left causes, and what do they have to show for it? Overconsumption (which is only possible because they live in developed countries and participate in a fucked labor market) and hamfisted demands for more "inclusive" outfits. Inclusive outfits? Give me a break.

Okay, gimme those hats. I've earned them.🎩

bonus shot of one of the brands I mentioned. You see how the jumpsuits fit on normal people, but they make the fats look like a tube of biscuits.

The fact that she’s still alive is her only success, although if she’s going through all the back surgeries that are listed above, that survival should have an asterisk. Opiate-addicted Regan probably won’t generate the same social buzz as Ironman Regan.

As far as I can tell, the only surgery Ragen's had is fusion of her C4-C6 vertebrae, back at the end of April, which she seems to be making a good recovery from. I'm sure the story would be very different, were it a thoracic or lumbar fusion.

I thought she and Julianne had bought a house out in the desert, but skimming through her FB tells me they're still living in the same little place in Long Beach they've lived in for years. It has a hallway that is 14 feet long, and Ragen claimed to have walked a full mile by doing laps of the hallway (because, as high-risk deathfats, neither she nor Julianne have stepped outside, except for doctor visits and the surgery, in over a year).
