As far as I can tell, the only surgery Ragen's had is fusion of her C4-C6 vertebrae, back at the end of April, which she seems to be making a good recovery from. I'm sure the story would be very different, were it a thoracic or lumbar fusion.

I thought she and Julianne had bought a house out in the desert, but skimming through her FB tells me they're still living in the same little place in Long Beach they've lived in for years. It has a hallway that is 14 feet long, and Ragen claimed to have walked a full mile by doing laps of the hallway (because, as high-risk deathfats, neither she nor Julianne have stepped outside, except for doctor visits and the surgery, in over a year).

Those poor healthcare workers. I can think of nothing worse than a morbidly obese woman with a fucked up skeletal system and no qualifications “teaching” you how you should do medicine without consideration to obesity. Man, the patience these young doctors must have. I could never.

I think it's smart for the health care workers to get her in for training. Have her do her session, then when she leaves be like "this is what we're up against" and figure out ways to deal with patients like her without enabling them to harm themselves.

they don't, and shouldn't be, spaffing away valuable clinical hours on that, plus bolstering her massive ego and giving it a platform is just feeding the delusion. All they need to do is get a manager or office staff to do it.

I never used to take any of that shit in clinical and would shut it down. Humouring their absurd beliefs is perpetuating a lie is perpetuating the harm.

Even in this blurry picture I can feel the beam of her crazy eyes, radiating out from behind her glasses. Given how stretched for time healthcare providers can be in hospital settings, I think she's getting the *just smile and nod* treatment to not upset the crazy woman- at this point it's just a case of dealing with the major medical issue she's there with, and pawing her off to some poor specialist for after-care with a side dish of her future rants.
If she had a normie job she may be required to have a yearly physical, where a PCP would be able to show her numbers getting worse every year.

A part of what I find so maddening is the FA movement's contempt for drs and science, despite the literal back breaking work and millions in research $$ that could have gone to a better place. And Ragen is one of the most cited among FA crowd for her 'facts' about medical fatphobia (along with Lindo Bacon). Yet Ragen did not even finish her humanities degree- but has crowned herself a health expert and 'researcher'?? It's the absolute arrogance, the smug crazy eyes, and the inexplicably 1990s style of fashion and web design she chooses, that makes the Ragen picture a whole ball of wtf is going on here.

It's interesting her backstory seems to be not well known- Dances with Facts uncovered her prior employment with an mlm selling diet shakes, however. But what was her origin story? Who are her parents, and how did they raise such a bizarre alienated person? Why does she not go beyond '90s fashion, tech and web design?

One of my favorite “hate watches” are clothing brands that bow down to the demands of super fats. The funniest ones are athletic gear (ie Outdoor Voices) because someone who needs a 4XL definitely spends time at the gym and hiking on weekends. An Instagram popular small-run brand I would like if they didn’t cater to fats and use the ugliest fat models (ie “non binary blobs”) ALWAYS has XS-XL sell out instantly when new lines drop. But what sizes are ALWAYS in stock for months on end? 2XL - 6XL.

I have an awesome handmade piece from a girl who’s also gotten quite popular since she now makes items for celebrities. She mostly repurposes vintage items and vintage fabrics, which limits the sizes she can sell. But, IMO, her shit is pretty inclusive already; I think she’s had stuff from a 23” waist to a 36” waist for sale. But OF COURSE in the last few months as her visibility has grown, fats have shown up in her IG comments throwing tantrums because she doesn’t make a 50” waist item and because her brand is “fatphobic” for using skinny models. She took to her page and BLASTED all these people and basically broke down why these demands were near impossible being a one-woman operation who uses dead stock items. I gained a lot more respect for her that day!!

I love it when these obese danger hairs complain that thin women going to thrift stores, buying the ugliest looking obese clothes I've ever seen, and then repurposing them into something actually cute, is fatphobic because they are taking clothing options away from fat people. Yes, thin people should not be allowed to buy fat people clothing even if it's been stuck on a thrift store rack for months.

First, Ragen's a Narcissist, which means she never makes mistakes, never fails, and is never inadequate in a way that can't be explianed away in her favor. Therefore, everything she does is good—including her dated, ugly site, which she probably put together with a WYSIWYG template, and has given no thought to since. If she thinks it looks good, and if she can easily navigate it, then it should be fine for everybody else (because Narcissism).

Second, some people are just aesthetically tone-deaf—utterly insensible to the visual world, and beauty—and while it's a lot more common in men, I think Ragen's one of those people. She may be able to recognize something is visually attractive, because she's been repeatedly told it is, but doesn't understand what makes it so, and can't learn anything from that in order to replicate it. And I don't think it even occurs to her most of the time to try, or that there are good reasons to do so.

I totally understand women who can't be bothered with doing their hair, wearing makeup, or putting a lot of money and effort into clothes. I know a lot of "ungirly" women like that. But those women still manage to pick colors, prints and styles that flatter, and find aa casual, low-maintenance hairstyle that suits them. Ragen just keeps failing on all counts; she just keeps defaulting to the lowest-effort, least-attractive options time and again.

And that, fortunately, is one of the things that has limited Ragen's reach in the image-obsessed social media era—younger fatties coming up look at Ragen and they don't want to be her; she's the dowdy, sexless, frumpy fat woman they dread becoming. They want to pretend they are just as hot and sexy and fashionable as the skinny girls, and deserve to consoom just as much as they do. Most don't yet have medical conditions that require Ragen's advice on navigating "fatphobic" health care, but if they do, that's all they'll take from her site.

The only fatties I ever see who still speak approvingly of Ragen are older, broken-down ones who have been drinking the FA/HAES Flavoraid for at least 20 years, or the fatty influencers who used to be relevant back in the '00s, but are now old and uncool. And Ragen's not that old--but visually, she has no appeal, so she might as well go sit with the grandmas.

I share your sadness and still find Ragen the most fascinating lolcow out there. Her inability to understand the most basic things such as "an elite athlete" being a person who's so athletic in a sport that that person's fitness and skill level is almost beyond comprehension and completely unachievable to us mere mortals, or that she seriously thinks that her googling and reading through Linda Bacon's intentionally miswritten book will make her a "trained researcher" or an expert in medicine. This makes it infuriating when thinking about poor Julianne and how Julianne's parents have tried to get in contact with her to save her from her impending doom caused by her obesity, but Ragen insisting her parents being "concern trolls" and hence recommending that Julianne cuts all contact with them. Similarly I've seen posts on Ragen's site and social media where she recommends that someone suffering from e.g. obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) or joint/bone problems that are obviously entirely caused by super morbid obesity and relieved by losing weight that those persons won't pursue weight loss because it "won't help them" and "long term weight loss is impossible" anyway. I just wonder how many people have died, gone blind or become disabled because of Ragen's horrible advice. That level of quackery should make Ragen barred from receiving any form of actual healthcare for the rest of her life.

And that is exactly what Ragen is brought in for. To my knowledge, she get's never paid for these gigs and is even told up front that she's being there as a "representative patient" which is code for a difficult person to deal with that can't be reason with. In her narcissistic tone-deaf way Ragen takes these special settings as proof of medical professionals seeking her out for medical advice and training, completely - possibly, but unlikely, unintentionally - missing the point that she is truly in for the polar opposite reason. In other words, Ragen's job in these events is to toughen the medical students up and to teach them how to have good bedside manners when comforted with the most idiotic, unknowing, stubborn patients possible.

I actually can't wait to see what you've been able to dig up . I'm by no means a Ragenologist, but I remember reading through some of her Livejournal entries a long time ago. My impression of her "origin" is that she has always been fat, but early on she wasn't super morbidly obese, but merely an obese person with a BMI in the low-30's range. She indicated in her early-ish posts of being in love with some man and similar to many lonely people with limited dating experience, she got engaged in all sorts of magical thinking where she effectively believed that small looks, talks etc. that the man she loved made towards her meant a lot more than they really did. The story, to my recollection, ended with the man moving away or dating someone else and it occurred to Ragen that this was due to her size. This is of course unsurprising, because after being old, having a high BMI is the worst thing a woman can suffer from in terms of reducing the male appeal. Whereas a normal person would hopefully take this as a wakeup call, Ragen decided to double down and went all in on HAES. At some point she also decided to become bisexual or even a lesbian, and I believe that this is more caused by her inability to get men than it is due to her actually having true feelings for other women. What makes Ragen's story even sadder, is that I've noticed her having some real talent that she could cultivate and actually becoming decent in. For example, her writing is relatively good, as is her dancing (considering her obesity). She also has a good singing voice, although she can't keep a tune, but that's what singing lessons are for. However, she isn't good at researching, studying, focusing, staying consistent etc. that are activities she commonly engages (or claims to engage) in. If she would actually lose some weight and focus on one or two of her real talents she could become good enough to earn a decent living.

Gym equipment has weight limits. That’s why half the shit is broken in mainstream gyms. A lot of machines have a surprisingly low weight limit. 250 lbs is common even for commercial equipment.

She's only going to pile on the pounds now that's shes even more sedimentary and the issues will just continue to compound until shes just like her partner.

Can you tell us what doctor and when (year) she was told this? I don't recall ever hearing this story from Ragen before and I follow her somewhat closely.
