As the subtitle says, I’m a filthy casual who owns a Switch. Before buying my Switch I the only video games I really played were the Pokemon series (that’s why I bought a Switch actually, so I could play Let’s Go Eevee), some Mario games, a few RPGs, and simulator games. I’ve branched out since then but my experience is still pretty sparse.

The games I currently have for the Switch are:
  • Pokemon Sword
  • Let’s Go Eevee
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Breath of the Wild (still making my way through)
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World
  • Roller Coaster Tycoon
  • The South Park games (The Stick of Truth and Fractured but Whole)
  • Stardew Valley (bought but not yet played)
Hopefully that should give you an idea of what games I like. I like platformers, some RPGs, and relaxed games in general. I’m still a newbie at all this so I kind of suck at most video games, but I’m willing to try to branch out and try different types of games.

On a side note, I’m pretty interested in getting a PlayStation and trying more games but I figure I might as well wait until the next generation is released at this point.

Witcher 3. Though if you are getting a Playstation I'd get it on that. The graphics are way better, they downgraded it a fair bit for Switch. Of course PC is the best, you can have all the cool mods on top of everything else. Tbh I'd recommend getting a good PC or gaming laptop over a PS4, you can use it for everything that a computer does aside from games.

Divinity original sin 2 is also a fun RPG with customizeable character.

I actually have been considering saving up and getting a gaming PC. My personal computer is a MacBook Pro that’s already suffering through all the shit I’ve put on it over the years and has little space left, so I don’t play games on it. I know that PCs have a much larger game library anyway. I’ll have to do some research on what kind of PC would be best for me.

Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle!

Its basically like if someone put X COM and Nintendo in a blender. A turn based strategy game set in the Mario universe. Perfect mix of challenge and casual fun, some light RPG elements and I think fits with the other stuff in your library. I also didn't find the Rabbids obnoxious and actually chuckled in places.

It came out a while ago so should be pretty cheap.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon if you like a good time waster
Fire Emblem: Three Houses if you like strategy games where you build and train your team
Luigi's Mansion Three because it is actually fun going around breaking shit and trying to get anything
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze because it is actually very fun
Hollow Knight: Silk Song
Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer

If you're seriously considering buying a pc (or even a ps4) I'd put multiplat/indies on the backburner, you'd be paying more for them on the switch compared to other platforms, plus storage management is harder on the switch.

This is the laptop model I currently use for games, it's working great for current gen games and I didn't have to drop a huge amount of money (usually good ones can be over $2000). If you wanna DIY and do the building your own desktop thing then be prepared to spend hours comparing PC parts and stuff lol. (btw everyone will tell you to build one, but it's a lot of work and learning if you're not already familiar)

Personally I wasn't interested in that so I went with the above model and it's been serving me well. Asus also has some decent laptops. Whatever you choose I'd watch plenty of reviews, make sure it has a good graphics card and check System Requirements Lab to make sure it's going to be good enough for the most demanding of your games you're wanting to play.

If you're into JRPGs, definitely get Octopath Traveler. It's been one of my favorites on the Switch.

Also, the FFVII port to the Switch is actually one of the best ones so get that if you care about FFVII at all.

As for other things, I really liked Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I fell out of the series with the 3DS games but this one felt like one of the classics as I went through the story.

Good to know, thanks! A laptop might be a better idea because I don’t really have space in my room for a whole desktop setup (too many bookshelves, haha). And like you said, building a PC sounds like an intensive process for someone like me who just wants to casually game and only has meaningful experience with Macs.

Is storage space an issue with a laptop? I know most full-fledged video games are usually tens of gigabytes.

If you aren't too into huge AAA games, get a system with a 1050TI and i5. 8GB of RAM is still fine for most games. Most of the good indie games barely even need 3GB of video memory. For Witcher 3, this setup would run it at medium-high. For a newer game, medium or medium-high.

Unless you plan to have over a hundred games installed at once, a 500GB SSD is more than enough. For laptops, look into thermals. If it's prone to shutting off from heat, it may as well be a fancy paperweight.

A lot of great games barely get past 10 gigs. Some of my favorite newer ones like Rimworld only go past 5 gigs because I'm addicted to mods. Then there's the decades worth of games you can get running with some tinkering and GOG(DRM free game store known for selling ancient games alongside some newer ones) use.

GOG has Mac support, so see if any games you want are on there. Not all games will have a Mac version, but many popular ones will. For example, Stardew Valley.
