Regarding the Halal rule and interpersonal drama -

Our community has grown large. It thrives on eccentric people voluntarily putting themselves out into the open. In the last few weeks, we have seen the books close on a few personalities that many people follow. The stories worth talking about have reached the second cover and historically, during these times, the Lolcow communities turn inwards.

I would like to remind everyone of two rules.

Handle problems like an adult. Personal matters involving others (including staff) should be handled privately. Post in the Talk to Staff board, use conversations, or email us at admin@kiwifarms.net

Do not plea for sympathy. Do not make posts about how you are leaving the forums. Just leave.

These two principals are not rules I've come up with. I am not smart enough to think up things like this. A lot of what we owe to the board comes from the lessons learned in the many years that communities like ours have existed.

I like to give people the benefit of a doubt. Most of the time it works in my favor, though not always. We actually have a thread in our supporter board called "Why hasn't __ been banned yet?" because of the remarkable amount of leniency the staff has given to people. One of the things I hear repeatedly is that we are considerably tolerant, despite the board's subject matter.

What continues to grow our community where others have wilted and failed is the intake of new blood. You cannot drive everyone out of a place this big that you do not like. You cannot raise up a lynch mob when someone makes a faux pas. Not everyone who is weird is a lolcow. Stop trying to terraform the farm into your own personally tailored environment. I will not allow it to happen.

If you do not like someone, that's fine. I don't hate you for it. If you hate them so much it causes problems, you need to tell someone so that a resolution can be worked out. If you don't trust me enough to talk to you, there are other people that can handle the message better.
  • @Null doesn't like anyone. If you need an antagonist and want a hammer, I'm on nobody's side. Alternatively, if you have forum feature ideas, run them by me.
  • @Glaive is literally the nicest person on the forum and has enough mana left to cast magic on me.
  • @KatsuKitty is a gay sperg more in touch with gender and relationship drama than anyone else I know. If you need a gay friend to talk to, talk at him.
  • @introman is real. If you need someone to give you straight talk, talk to Introman.
  • @CompyRex and @Dunsparce have been around since before me. If you have issues regarding the board (especially from the standpoint of an older member), try them.
  • @Surtur is an ex-marine and also a senior member. If you want someone firmly grounded in the real world and ambivalent to online drama, talk to him.
Et cetera. You have options. If you choose to not take those options and complain ambiguously to people, that's on you. It shows that conflict resolution is not in your nature, and you're not taking anyone's best interests into account.

In the past I've done things to help compartmentalize people. Our chat gets close to 100 people at once during prime time and I know there's a lot of noise and a lot of bumped elbows. Even our VOIP server gets packed at times. I'm making efforts to break things down so people are less likely to spazz out. If you have features you think will help with this, I'm all ears.

Personally I recommend telling staff about an issue before it escalates.

It's better to take things privately over PM than doing it out in the open. In my experience doing things publicly never ends well.

I've seen the Halal label thrown around the second anyone makes a bizarre post in a thread or ruffles a couple feathers. Not that it isn't always deserved but the term "cannibalistic" has been used to somewhat accurately describe The Farm during a period of lulz famine.

I know it's usually on a case-by-case basis, but would it be of benefit to write up some loose guidelines before staff would even consider turning someone Halal? It might tamp down on some of the eagerness if there are a few visible requirements.

Unless there already are some somewhere and I'm a tard who overlooked.

Guidelines are hard to establish. The rule is that staff decides who gets a thread. Trying to throw around lolcow status or threatening people with a thread makes you an enormous faggot.

Let me start out by admitting that I am a fresh nubile Kiwi. I have no illusions that I have any special insight into the Farms thus far.

I had an interesting discussion with a few of the more veteran members and I thought perhaps I should share the salient points of my discussion here.

I lurked Kiwi Farms for a long while before finally joining up; in a panic once Deagle Nation was revealed as ruse. I long appreciated the prevailing Halal status, as much as I naturally feared it. This is far from my first troll/exceptional individual community, and this dynamic is not new to me. I am of the belief that the reflexive self-criticizing/cannibalizing dynamic serves an important function: it makes a strong community stronger and will kill a weak community. This is a truth I believe in any predatory community - and we are predatory creatures. It is important, and without it, the Farms would be bloated and weak.

I realize I lack a context: the Kiwi Farms waxes and wanes from one massive lolcow to the next, and there exists a very real fear that we prey too heavily on one another in periods of drought. At the end of the day, acting as a fresh set of eyes (as much as that is worth), I do not think there needs to be any real fear. Those that are sacrificed as Halal are well-vetted.

That being said, I think there should be an emphasis on our ability to admit when we are wrong. I very recently saw that in the Salamanderkin thread. What appeared initially as a juicy lolcow, was naught but a chucklecalf. Kiwis were able to recognize the difference and slow their assault without any authoritarian influence.

A double fuckin plus.
