Remakes and Reboots: Or how Hollywood ran out of originality -

In the wake of the inevitable craptitude of the oldboy remake, why not a thread to discuss either the most egregiously bad remakes ever made (and oh boy are there many) or the few shining examples of truly great...or at least ok remakes. Just spew forward any crappy remake you particularly dislike or any good remake you want to gush over

Red Letter Media went over why remakes are so par for the course.

He points out now movies have a lot more competition nowadays to other entertainment mediums like the internet and video games. And it's not that studios aren't willing to make original movies, it's the fact we won't watch them. We'd rather see more recognizable names.

Not that remakes are a particularly good idea, but it's more of a morally grey issue in general. Film is a business and if you could remake a movie and get 5 million in profit vs making some unrecognizable thing and getting 500 000$ in profit. Which would you do?

However, this line of thinking only serves to reinforce the simple-minded dichotomy of "art=good/money=bad."

The issue seems to be studios throwing in all their chips on one recognizable property rather than spreading it equally over five "original" films.

("Original" is in quotes because originality in the arts is itself a grey area. Who was it who said there's only about ten different possible plots?)

The remake of Willard with Crispin Glover is really good. Would Bram Stoker's Dracula count?

So does anyone know if the remake of Carrie was any good? I was so disappointed to find out that they remade it.

It's been remade before as well. The recent remake was.... decent-ish. I mean it wasn't the worst movie I've seen all year. But it didn't take nearly as make risks as the original movie.

I hate most remakes. One that I do actually prefer over the original is the 2006 version of The Hills Have Eyes.

That's fucked up. The Naked gun is perfect. Are they gonna remake the Blues Brothers next ?
(And don't mention Blues Brothers 2000, that was a brutal rape, not a movie)

Oh god it's so bad. Soooo bad. And seriously, he becomes injured from a fucking car bomb? What a pussy. Robocop 3 was horrible enough, just leave it alone.

Don't get me started on Blues Brothers 2000, or the N64 game of it.

You know this recent Oldboy wasn't the 1st Oldboy remake. Also, what is the point of remaking Naked Gun? you cannot have a Naked Gun movie without Leslie Nielsen. They might as well remake Ghostbusters and not have any of the original cast.

Well Airplane was remade once.

The only remake I'm looking forward too is the new Godzilla, but that is more of a reboot then a remake. Maybe it will start a new series, like the 98 one was supposed too. Well I guess technically the 98 one was the reason Godzilla 2000 got made as a response, and that led to a new Japanese series that ended with Final Wars, but you know what I mean.

I think someone should find a Vince Vaughn look alike, and remake the Psycho remake!

Luckily I've kept that bottle of Everclear and untouched Benzos for a rainy day. That rainy day has arrived, Ladies and Gentlemen.

I would have probably liked the 98 Godzilla way more if they didn't try so damn hard to be a Jurassic Park movie, and maybe tried to be like, I dunno, a Godzilla one? I heard the original script draft had him fighting a monster, I wonder if that script is better then what got made? I actually didn't think that Godzilla design was bad, it looked very different, but it was a cool monster design.

FUCK OFF. The Naked Gun is a holy relic. Leslie Neilson was a genius.

God damn, this pisses me off.

I hate remakes, with very few exceptions. The Carrie remake wasn't actually that bad, but it wasn't an improvement over the original.

Could you imagine a scene like this in a movie today?

Even comedy films today lack the same charm and self awareness that something like Naked Gun or Airplane possessed.

I heard that at one point Howard Stern was gonna produce or direct a Rock and Roll High school remake. Even though I love Howard Stern, that sounds like it could have been shit, I mean how do you remake Rock and roll high school? That is up there with Naked Gun as a movie that couldn't properly be remade, nor should it, people still watch the original, if your really a Ramones fan, I'm sure you have seen Rock and Roll High school, although I can understand if you didn't see the obscure 90s sequel, which didn't have the Ramones. (but did at least have a cool cameo by Mojo Nixon, that really was the best part of the movie)
