The first RE movie seems like it was way more based on the second game more than anything, with only a few homages to the first game, from what I remember barely any time is spent in a mansion and a zombie is never seen in a mansion, some adaption of the first game (though I guess I could be remembering wrong)

When Capcom originally hired George Romero his script was directly based on the first game with STARS infiltrating the mansion, but then he did weird changes too like make Chris Redfield Native American because of the name "Redfield"

Eh, the Romero script idea of "Chris Redfield is an Injun" was likely due to the fact that was a semi-common piece of fanon online back in the late 90's and early 2000's.

I'm not sure where it came from, maybe it was the name Redfield or maybe it came from the S.D Perry novels or even a popular early fanfic was the origin of it.

I'd say that was less of a case of "proto-woke" and more Romero did not know the difference between canon and fanon.

It was mostly based on the underground lab section of RE 1...even tho that was just 1/3 or less of the actual game...besides the lab in RE 1 was nowhere near as huge as its in the movies. Oh and a licker is there, there is your element from RE 2...honestly if one of the scientists became a G Virus monster, maybe I could see where you are coming from...at most, the only two things I get from RE 2 in the first movie is the licker and the fact that the climax takes place of a speeding train with a monster on it...but I swear, it almost feels like a coincidental similarity.

Besides, the sequel has this news paper implying Jill Valentine dealt with zombies before which ALSO implies that the events of the first game (or at least some sort of equivalent) did happen during the first movie at the surface...hence why she knew what they were and what to do against them. It almost feel like there is a movie missing between the first and second, like Jill was suppose to have this solo film first before Apocalypse was suppose to come out. If Apocalypse came out today, I could almost swear that they were setting up some sort of Jill solo film...it would still be an ass pull but it would confirm there is implied story that will be told. Oh and same news paper implies her partner died and that partner was called Leon...yeah...I know.

Then again we see him later this movie series so that newspaper is most likely not even canon since then (or never was).
As I said before their intention was that the first movie was supposed to be the exact same world as the games, even if it doesn't make sense that's what they were going for at least, but they then ditched that idea for the sequel.

The simplest answer why it was more focused on a lab than mansion is the lab sets we're probably cheaper to build and/or film at than a fancy mansion, I want to say the majority of the underground scenes where filmed in subway tunnels in Berlin or something like that

Wow, for real?

Almost makes me glad George Romero isnt around anymore, Im sure he would have been a victim of the woke crowd sooner or later. I love his movies but the guy was a shameless in his social commentary at times. To be fair, I still would have prefered to see his vision for the movie come true in some sort of level, maybe a comic adaptation? Im surprised no one thought on doing that.
I'm pretty sure his script is out there online to read, but I never read the whole thing myself, another weird idea I remember hearing about though that is each level of the mansion was supposed to contain a different monster, ie zombies on one level, hunters on another etc, instead of all of them just running around the entire mansion like in the game.

Trust me, George Romero's fans are glad he isn't around anymore.

It's a cautionary tale about how siccess can freeze you. He had one hit and never learned anything ever again.

Direct-to-DVD, Aslyum-tier garbage starring zombies as the hot button du jour.
It's a shame because the dude definitely had talent beyond being "Mr Zombie" given how brilliant and clever the movie Martin is for one example.

I feel like the S.D Perry novels were big influences on the movie, I haven't read them but from what I know didn't an original one (ie not directly based on a game) involve a giant underground Umbrella facility before the first movie or anything like was in the games?

To be very fair, I will always love his GOOD movies, Night of the living dead, Dawn, Day especially...Land is a bit meh but I usually watch it when Im marathoning the Dead series....but its not one I usually watch at random unlike the other three.

Then Diary happened....oh....then Survival happened...oh man....and then he died. Its pretty sad....George really lost his touch with age and maybe not adapting his social commentary format into something more subtle for today's audience...tho in a way he just seemed to freaking fed up with his own genre in his last two zombie movies

It was also pretty common back then to have a hero or two be part injun. Which was a throwback to an even earlier time when it was fairly popular to do so.

I think I own the book in question? I'd have to look for it. I remember it was a green cover and I think it was about either Jill or Rebecca infiltraiting a lab or something like that.
I do have another one outside of that book, and the code veronica one.
For those curious, the code veronica probably came out the same time the dream cast one did because they describe Steve's hair as "Leonardo di caprio'esque" or something along those lines. I also vaguely remember something about 'Wesker's cat eyes" or something. The descriptions were pretty hilarious but i'd need to do a rereading for sure.

You know, looking back, I wonder who did have the idea to bring Wesker back to life in Code Veronica. I wonder how that talk went, "You know the johnny bravo looking evil snitch from RE 1? The one that got a fucking Tyrant claw buried into his chest and seemed 100% dead? lets bring him to life and give him all these cool physical skills and glowing cat eyes! Gonna be real cool!"

Not that I dislike the idea, I think that Wesker going from this lackey to this mastermind involved with almost everything even before RE 1 was an interesting move in the long term but looking back, it was just a bizarre course of action, wasnt it? Bringing this ghost from Chris's past and kind of making him the big bad of the series until RE 5, with his influence still being felt to this day.

Besides, I wonder how a Code Veronica remake would handle Wesker...hell, just how WOULD he look in the new engine ? They better bring DC Douglas back because I just cant see anyone else voicing Wesker anymore...guy could be hammy as shit (tho it oddly fit Wesker at that point, guy was near to reach his ultimate goal so might as well ditch subtlety) but he did prove he can be more subtle too in other entries.

I only read his take on RE2, but I remember enjoying it. I think it cut out a lot of the police station and had more scenes of Clare and Leon together? I definitely remember it having more scenes of Leon and Ada kicking ass.

Ok so I Finished RE extinction. That was unironically a fun movie.

You gotta admire how they decided to go from the ridiculously hilarious mess that was Apocalypse, and try and refocus it into something more balanced. "How do we make audiences care about a character that can kick everything’s ass and has OP powers?" Lets raise the stakes and go full mad max. Just have the T virus just COMPLETELY screw over the world ecosystem. Im not exaggerating when I say mad max, as the T virus somehow dried up all the oceans and forests. Probably not lore friendly, as I remember the T virus plant monsters but it was neat. I'll just pretend it’s somehow like the bad ending from RE outbreak.

Alice gets better characterization then the last one. They really emphasized the loner aspect of her character and how everybody she cares and loves gets wacked. I feel like they struck a better balance between her personality in 1 and her ability’s in 2. Not to mention they make her feel more vulnerable, with an entire subplot about umbrella cloning and killing her in an effort to make a cure. The film is still over the top with her stunts, but they did a decent job making it less Bollywood and more solid action. The parts where she goes full devil may cry with her Gurkha knives, was legit fucking rad. She actually had some trouble in the final fight too.

Most of the movie is spent following the mad max survivors as they look for gas and civilization, which balances out the Alice parts and makes it a fun survival movie. Claire replaces Jill in this and is the leader of this plucky band of survivors. She does a good job, I would say Jill was better acted, but Claire’s leadership style and action scenes were fine stuff. She brings along Carlos and LJ from the previous movie.

Carlos was pretty dam great, loved having more of him in this.
Really wish they didn’t kill him off,

They did my man LJ dirty. He’s still rocking the golden guns which gave me a smile, but they cut down on his quips and had him get infected and refuse to tell anybody about it. Which was pretty dam dumb for a 5 year zombie survivor.
He’s gets Carlos infected and killed ughhhh

The scene with the zombie crows was really cool. I feel like the recent games have neglected them and the real terror of facing ordinary zombified animals.

The funniest scene in this movie was when Alice uses the FORCE to levitate rocks. Yes I am serious, she has full on force powers. She melted a guy’s brain at the end of the last movie, but I thought for sure they would forget about that. NOOO she has fucking force powers! But I gotta give em credit, she doesn’t use it that often, and everytime she does she gets tired. (kinda like baby yoda in mando.)

Wesker shows up for a couple fun cameos. Surprised his actor got shit on by the fanbase, Didn’t really see the issue. He’s got the voice, hair and sunglasses down. Although he kinda looks odd from the side view. Maybe he was fat and I didn’t notice? Hmm.

One thing that kinda bugged me a bit, is the last movie had most of its second half spent trying to save this little girl, who was implied in the ending credits to join up with the team and become important. Nowhere to be seen in this or the sequels. Apparently in the novels ( yes this entire movie series has novels adaptations) Alice fucking kills her under umbrella’s control, which seems like a really shitty way to have her go. Especially when Carlos meets up with her in the movie and is all sunshine and hugs. It also explains Jill has her own convoy of survivors somewhere.

Overall a solid watch. I can honestly say this first trilogy warts and all, is better than the Disney star wars sequels. How fucking crazy is that?

Legit, had they removed the RE connections and Alice and just had this movie about a convoy of survivors in a desert years after the start of a zombie apocalypse...fuck that would have been an interesting concept to explore...again, Mad Max but with zombies. Maybe they could have this evil company like Umbrella trying to find a cure and maybe they are after the convoy because one of the members is immune or something and its a race on who gets to make a cure first.

Again, it doesnt sound like Citizen Kane but it feels like something that could be entertaining with proper characters and action scenes.

Hell, I even imagined the convoy having this problem avoiding "Z-Storms"...its like sand storms but their term for HUGE zombie herds that they gotta to decide to wait it out, get around or maybe power through (starting to get some Organ Trail vibes...).

*writing it down* Guess I know what I might be working in the future.

Don't get me wrong, I love Tom (and I wouldn't bet against him in a bar fight), but I think they misread the room. The character isn't a paper pusher. See: Wesker's demonstration of speed in CV.

I mean, to play devil's advocate with Extinction...Wesker wasnt present, only his hologram so I dont know what people expected...its clear they were teasing him and Alice confronting in the future. About his powers? How do we know he doesnt have them? Its not like he will get up and demonstrate to others in the meeting. The third movie was exploring the more mastermind aspect of Wesker instead of a physical threat right away...tho if that was their intention all along Im not sure, maybe Im just covering for their crap writing because Im sure anyone could write something better.

IIRC, Diary of the Dead was a decent concept that was massively botched to say the least.

Survival of the Dead was pretty much a case of Romero needing the money after a messy divorce and the Great Recession and going through the motions to crank out a movie on the cheap since it was 2010 and he knew a zombie movie with his name on it would sell.

IIRC, the Weinsteins were also involved with Diary and Survival so it may have been a contract issue as well.

The biggest problem with Diary is that he didn't understand the medium he was trying to satirise. You can't do a found footage movie then add edits and music. Survival was so bland I cannot remember anything about it beyond a zombie riding a horse. More controversially, I've tried many times to enjoy Day but just can't. I can appreciate why other people like it, but once you look beyond the fantastic gore effects its a bunch of unlikeable people shouting at eachother for 90 minutes.

Also, my wish for RE8 DLC is that it has at least one of Jill, Rebecca and Barry. That is all.

They were clearly going for the empire strikes back setup with him. Wesker: "Get that zombie cure shit done and dont make me get out of this chair."

And now its time for that man to get out of the chair.

So Resident Evil Afterlife… is a mixed bag. Id love to call this RE back to Bollywood, but that’s only the first 10 mins or so. As im something of a fan of this franchise, I enjoyed it. The beginning and end were fun. However, the middle portions of it vary in quality.

This is the point in the franchise where you can see the wheels come off a bit, with an over-reliance on CGI and 3D gimmicks inspired by the Avatar craze of the time. There’s a little less of a shit given for continuity (Remember the cure plotline? gone) and it has some of the funniest bits of unintentional hilarity out of all them so far.

Describing the plot is a little difficult… This franchise has had a bad habit of having interesting ending teasers for its movies and then either going in a completely different direction or just failing to utilize it properly. I failed to mention this before, but at the very end of Extinction Alice comes across an entire clone army of herself. In this, she immediately sends this army of clones into the meat grinder that is Tokyo and gets them all killed without any remorse or mention afterwards. Not that I mind much, as I enjoy that kind of delightful retardation. They just could have played the star wars angle a bit more for meme potential.

So yeah, Wesker is in Tokyo for some reason. They replaced Jason O'Mara with Shawn Roberts and he does a pretty nice ham fisted job of playing the character. I don’t think they get any more RE5 if they tried. So anyway.. The clones get Wesker to bomb the shit out of Tokyo and then the movie has a hilarious 3D plane crash because he was dumb enough to not put the plane on autopilot while he was kicking the shit out of Alice.

Interestingly enough, they actually nerfed Alice. After Wesker injects her with a serum, she can’t use her powers and is basically a normal RE hero now. So on one hand she’s less Bollywood badass, and on the other she has more screentime now. Did not mind one bit, as I have consistently enjoyed her performance across all these movies. Regardless of the limited potential of the writing, she does well when she’s allowed to have quiet moments of reflection and interaction.

So 6 months after this plane crash, she goes and flies a yak-52 plane looking for the survivors who went out to Alaska. She finds only an amnesiac Claire and has no plan or idea of what to do. So decides to just randomly take a flyby of the western coastline and ends up in Hollywood. Which surprisingly looks a lot better than the desert hellhole of las Vegas. There’s trees!

They find a group of surviving celebrity’s (and one marine) on top of this prison surrounded by zombies and decide to land and help em out. This middle section is undoubtedly the weakest part of the movie. It feels less like Resident evil and more like a shittyer version of the walking dead. The stakes were so dam low compared to the last couple movies. I couldn’t have cared less for any of these OC characters and they are all forgettable. But.. this section does have one really bright spot.

CHRIS PRISON BREAK REDFIELD!

1623970240646.png

I legit enjoyed Wentworth Miller’s performance in this, You can tell they brought him in more for prison break then anything else, but he did the role justice and I liked how they used him in it. The lore on him being in Hollywood is fucking ridiculous though. Apparently he was transferred there to help the military during the initial outbreak and got locked up by the prisoners for shits and giggles before they left. So he’s basically been in a cell for almost 6 years while the world was burning because these dumbass celebrity’s didn’t trust him. AND YET, somehow Wesker knows who he and claire are. Bonkers shit.

Even better, this film is clock full of fucking RE5 plagas zombies, right down to the Executioner enemy from the opening of 5. Why? No reason aside from the fact that RE5 released a year before this movie. Even Wesker has that plagas mouth shit. Rule of the cool baby!

Eventually the zombies finally start trying to bust though the walls and things get fun again. The Executioner starts hitting this gate with the hammer and it’s hilarious because he is just lightly taping it. Black guy celeb made me bust a gut when he pathetically swings an ax at him and the zombies. Just some limp wristed girly shit, from a tough muscle man. Wish I could find a clip.

Then we go balls to the walls with zombie asskicking action and Alice uses her secret weapon. Quarter shotgun!

This I like!

Claire gets a badass action scene too! (mostly)

Eventually everybody else gets taken out and it suddenly becomes the adventures of Alice, Chris and Clare. I am 100% on board with this. They have good chemistry and have a fun team dynamic. I do wish there was more interaction between Chris and Clare, her amnesia makes their relationship a borderline moot point. Apparently they did plan to film some flashbacks that were cut.

So they go to this ship I forgot to talk about, that’s promising safety and security and was the origin of the Alaska message. Find out that no shit, its an umbrella trap that’s containing the rest of the survivors in stasis.

Then we get the final fight of the movie. Wesker vs everybody, cheap Bollywood action at its finest!

But that’s not even the best part! The best part is where Chris starts slobbering out Clare’s name and they leave it in!
1623971799617.png

:story:

So yada yada, The good guys win, Wesker gets pwned and then umbrella helis come in to kidnap everybody.

I have to admit this is the worst one so far. I enjoyed a good chunk of it, but it felt unbalanced and rushed compared to the other ones. It definitely needed more polish to bring it in line with the quality of the last movie. But as a film that basically requires you to watch the other three? Still some stupid fun.

The one thing that sucks ass is apparently they don’t bring Back Chris after this. Dam shame. He’s not dead or anything, they just have him stashed in a lab or prison somewhere lore wise.

Hmm, this is interesting: He planned on CV, RE0, and RE4 being a trilogy.

It was going to revolve around the three Umbrella founders. 0 was heavily retooled into a prequel. Jill was supposed to visit Rockfort instead of Claire. I'm guessing that Jill, Chris, and Wesker were going to reunite in the Entrance Hall. Can you imagine Leon breaking into Salazar Castle and emerging in Spencer's mansion again? :story:

I hesitate to credit Suimura with that. Shinji Mikami told anyone who'd listen that horror games don't sell; something Mikami is now notorious for. CV is where his influence began to be felt.
