Resources for learning about congregate care/orphanages/group homes -

The only thing I know about so called "group homes" for children and teenagers is that there's a significant chance they'll leave in poor mental shape (whether they entered the system in poor mental shape notwithstanding). Otherwise, I don't know where to find an exposition on the topic. Any recommendations are appreciated.

I'd actively welcome personal anecdotes but that'd be major PLing.
