Retail Horror Special Edition: Black Friday/Black Thursday -

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

To not clutter the retail horror thread with Black Friday hate, Retail Kiwis could post what happened during the holidays here because it'll happen so frequently.

LANDWHALE

I never felt so bad for workers until I saw this. This brood comes standing outside of Five and Below just minutes before they opened. I needed to get inside for various reasons, so I hadn't commented at first despite the massive girth she carried. Like, imagine a 5'2 person that was bigger than Chris in terms of how big it reached out. I had to actually squirm to go past her despite the fact the store wasn't actually packed. (Not to the degree other stores were, it was just busy.)

Anyways, as I had to actually get things scattered across the store, I kept hearing her bitch about random shit. Keep in mind, this matters later. So after my mom and sis got their belongings, the line was short. In fact, the line disappeared by the time my sister was done with her own shopping. (My mom and me were finished quicker and the fact that there were 6 cashiers open made things quicker.)

Now, my sister has legit diagnosed Autism and has been diagnosed with OCD. She likes things in a particular way; she can't handle people as well as others can because of it. Seeing how there was no one behind her, she stopped just short so that she can talk to my mother. (Again, she's not very good with people. She's also not good at expressing things.)

Fun starts here. Land whale was in the line right next to us. She starts arguing with Employee A and I felt entirely uncomfortable because she's bitching about money. (...Its Five and Below. There's only 5 options for price range. )Not only that, but she was upset over posters that were not advertised like 2 for 4 for posters, when in reality, she pulled that out her ass. I knew the prices for those items as listed because I had to get posters for someone else. She kept telling the employees what to do because "its too much money" blah blah blah" despite being in the wrong.

She looks at me, then at my sister. Mind you, NO ONE IS IN LINE AT ALL. She states in such a bitchy tone: "You should move along, your holding up the line." Again, there was no line, and even if there was, the only one holding up anyone was her for making a list of complaints during the busiest time of year. At the same time, she's literally counting pennies and her lard made it hard to move around. She took up most of the lane. My mom didn't hear it, thankfully, and neither had my sister.

But they did hear the commentary about the employees after she was done. The other people in the store just stared at her. Oddly, I was with a bunch of kids in a section at one point that were better behaved than her.

Then again, I guess that's better than a bunch of middle aged women screaming loudly right outside of the store about sex. A hour later I still have no idea what the hell they were talking about. (At first it sounded like sex, then they were talking about something that sounded like bondage (?) and it just felt weird.) This was with a middle schooler standing beside her.

I haven't gone in for work yet today, because I have the closing shift. I can guarantee you right now that I'm going to get a lot of the late birds yelling at me that the good stuff that was on sale is already gone. BTW, I'm scheduled to be cutting Christmas trees all day so they will be doing this to the one employee with a running chainsaw in her hands.

My boyfriend has it worse, he works for Toys R Us, lol.

I bet you money they'll complain about you not bringing that tree to the car. I've seen someone get really ticked at that.

I've seen fights for toys, that's even worse. Like, 1,000 dollars for a fucking Monster High doll set.

Actually, I probably will have to do that a few times today, but we'll have lot guys to do that too so I don't think that will be too much of a problem. Our entire staff (about 100 people) will be working today, so we won't be short handed. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but Black Friday is usually a walk in the park for me, bitchy customers and all.

I pray for you, still. I can't handle the onslaught of the people bothering to line up, even if I'm just buying something. Though, it won't be bad if its happening later on.

Though, I feel bad for your boyfriend. Seriously, parents are cray when it comes to toy shopping.

Happened to me today - which would be Black Friday.
I'm a customer, and I know that working in retail is a piece of shit, I say thank-you please and politely ask, however this is kind of screwed me over several times especially on counters for takeaway food and hole-in-the-wall butchers.

I was at a Family Chinese BBQ Butcher to bring some food to a party, they probably knew me as to be abnormally well mannered, in comparison to their other customers.

I sat in the line with about three others in front of me, suddenly some petite asian woman barged in front of the line and started bringing out orders and the father (with a meat cleaver) told her to go into the back of the line. She began rambling on with him, arguing most likely with him as she started to buckle and whinge to them. She storms off to the back of the line and tried to force people into the counter and swarm it rather than wait in a civil line. She starts getting impatient and as I approach the corner she glances me a dirty look and after I send out my order and wait for my soy chicken she storms off when she learns that you also have to wait for them to PREPARE the meal - she felt so cheated. The daughter of the butcher explained to me that in China they don't really respect lines and some people are so entitled they think they can't wait, so they have a huge reality check when they come to Australia.

My brother worked at Toys R Us on black friday back when the Wii first came out. He said it was one of the most insane experiences of his life.

I'm glad we don't really do this in Canada and reading the stories about Black Friday it makes me reluctant to ever try and start it here even though stores really REALLY want to get into it

My feels go out to all of you who have to work today. My mom works at Whole Foods so she doesn't have it too bad today, but it's in the same parking lot as a Target, Home Goods, and Home Depot and right by one of the most nightmarish intersections in the city. Some days the traffic at that intersection gets backed up so bad that getting on to the main road takes a good 15 minutes of waiting.

Yeah, traffic was the worst part about today for me. I also had a customer that insisted I help her even though I was off the clock for lunch (not getting paid.) I said "sure, I'll get somebody for you" then just abandoned her and went to Subway.

My mother's store she works at kind of had a black friday sale in which everything was 50% off and she says whenever it's raining the store is packed so it was both 50% off and raining so it must have been cray cray
