So there have been some pretty major developments recently in the world of PS1 modding. First someone figured out a way to softmod any model of PS1 using original copies of games in the Tony Hawk's series allowing you to play burned CDs on any console without a mod chip. Still requires disk swapping though.

Now someone has figured out how to run custom code using just a memory card. Its very early doors but I hope this is explored further to see if people can use this to softmod PS1s. Being able to play any burned game in the library on any model of console with just a memory card with some custom code on it is pretty insane to think about.

Speaking of PS2, apparently PS2 games can be loaded from a burnt DVD now using MechaPwn. And not only that, but as a bonus, now it can play region-locked games from both the PS2 and PS1 libraries.

Decided to mod my Switch recently since its basically been gathering dust for over a year and not super impressed. Wanted to use it mainly for emulation and my first port of call was PS1 but it has worse performance that my old GPD XD. Maybe its a little too early and the scene isn't where it needs to be just yet.

Also tried to install some pirated games but kept getting errors, not sure if the games are bad or if I'm fucking up in the process somewhere but its not worth wasting my time on it. Got to say the information and documentation out there doesn't seem that great. Like I kept getting errors trying to launch retroarch and github and modder sites say stuff like its probably a corrupted sd card etc. Turns out that in order to give the homebrew menu full ram access on the switch which you need for more demanding apps you need to access it by holding R and pressing A on a game. Only stumbled on this as a 'fix' by accident through some rando's youtube video.

Interested to hear if anyone here has messed around with Switch homebrew and how you've found it. So far for me its been a bit meh.

Back when I was 14 NESticle, Stella and ZSNES were the most amazing innovations ever. Suddenly I was playing Secret of Mana and Castlevania on my 266mhz machine. They ran at half-speed, fog effects turned into thick pink clouds, and wind sounded like nails down a chalkboard, but man, I was playing them on the computer. If I got curious, there were over a thousand other ROMs to try out. Some of those games were pure garbage!

These days I can't decide if I'm one of those oldfags with rose-tinted glasses on. I do seem to be approaching a point where modern AAA games disappoint me over and over. More and more, my RTX 2060 prebuilt machine is turning into an emulator box. I've got San Andreas 1.0 running smooth on PCSX2 and the joy it gives me is like badly needed relief after Final Fantasy XV bored me almost to death.

unscrew it and pop thee analog sticks off, most drift is either caused by dust or plastic mold flash.

I had a tiny piece of excess plastic in mine that fucked up one of my sticks on occasion.

That being said I miss good third party options

Mostly because I like weird shapes and pretty colors and especially above all Clear Colored Plastics.

The black controller in the lower left owns and I still have mine. It was the only n64 controller in my friend group as a kid that didn't wind up with a busted analog stick.. Nearly impossible to get memory cards out of it though.

It's okay, not great. Retroarch works pretty well but you can't just dump entire sets into it or it will crash trying to scan them.

Cliffnotes on switch homebrew: make sure the SD is fat32, get sigpatches if you want to run pirated games (sigpatch updater in the homebrew store will do this for you), look up IncognitoRCM to erase your switch serial number and make your system unbannable online, and look into Tesla overlays to do all sorts of fun stuff with the base OS (Mission Control is a highlight - you can use basically any BT controller and fully remap the buttons).

Something I did a lot of last year was read into detail about how emulators work, and what exactly oddities like ScummVM actually are, and I came to a conclusion that ScummVM is low-key one of the most autistic projects in all of video games. Not to trash it, because good for them for their preservation efforts, but it's amazing how much garbage it supports, and how there doesn't exactly seem to be much criteria as to what makes the cut, and what doesn't.

My old famicom to NES converter broke, it was made by some bullshit third party manufacturer back in the 90's.

The main reason I got it was due to the holographic stickers on it and it was colored aqua, pink, yellow and white. Sadly any replacements that are readily available on amazon are flat gray and have no cool colors.

Hyperkin apparently does cool colored releases of their products but they're all limited quantities and like double the price.

I never played this game in my life but from my experience I'd say Win98+PCEm is a great combo.

Already did that years ago, no dice.

I'm looking through aliexpress because they tend to have real weird shit. I don't want to do etsy because all of that is ~~*CUSTOM*~~ where the pictures are photshopped and it's poorly 3D printed materials with acrylic paint.

The housing to the converter isn't too badly damaged, it got chipped and broke but that could be glued and maybe I can rehouse an existing converter?

I mean it even has those triangle safety screws that kept it together.
