The Star Wars franchise is beloved by millions of fans worldwide. The first movie was released in 1977, and in the decades since, a multitude of new films have been released, hundreds of books, several TV shows, and a merchandising empire that is unparalleled.

Still, as much as many fans love Star Wars, there has been some serious controversy in the fan base, especially in recent years.

Rian Johnson’s sequel trilogy film, The Last Jedi, was responsible for widespread division amongst fans, but surprisingly, many fans are still open to seeing what Johnson comes up with next, as revealed in a recent Reddit thread.

Rian Johnson’s ‘The Last Jedi’ was a controversial film

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released in December 2017. There were many expectations riding on the film, which was a sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a blockbuster movie that revived the Skywalker saga on the big screen.

Although fans turned out in droves to see it, right away, viewers pointed out what they perceived as serious issues in The Last Jedi.

Many fans criticized the movie for stepping too far outside the bounds of what is considered traditional for a Star Wars film. By introducing new storylines and nuances, director Rian Johnsonmanaged to please a few fans (and likely brought some new viewers onboard) but he ostracized some longtime members of the fan base.

Additionally, lots of fans complained about the direction of Luke Skywalker’s character, complaining that he was portrayed as too negative and sullen, compared to how he came across in the original trilogy.

Rian Johnson is still set to direct a new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy

Prior to the release of The Last Jedi, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson would be helming a brand-new trilogy, one that would feature exciting new characters in a galaxy far, far, away.

Following the release of the controversial film, many fans wondered if Johnson would still be allowed to follow through on his Disney deal, considering how many fans never wanted to hear Johnson’s name again.

However, reports still state that Johnson is attached to direct the new trilogy, even if, as he admitted, there are no concrete plans in place yet. “I have no update at all,” Johnson stated in late 2019, according to Yahoo. “But I’m still working with Lucasfilm on it, and they’re figuring out when they do what and everything.”

Some people in the fan base aren’t happy — but there are a few that are open to seeing what Johnson comes up with, as long as it doesn’t involve any established characters or storylines.

What do fans think of Rian Johnson’s new ‘Star Wars’ project?

Recently, some fans on Reddit opened up about Rian Johnson’s place in the Star Wars franchise, and how they envision his new trilogy. “I think Rian Johnson is a great director,” the original poster stated. “He is very creative and he works best when he can create his own personal story. I think that his new trilogy could end up being really good if he’s able to create the story himself.”

Other fans chimed in, with many claiming that the reason The Last Jedi was so ill-received among fans was that Johnson was forced to continue a story that J.J. Abrams created.

“As someone who loved the direction he was taking Star War, his trilogy cannot come fast enough,” one fan stated. Another claimed: “I still contend that years from now The Last Jedi will be the only film of Disney’s output so far that matures extremely well. I loved RJ’s take on the Star Warsuniverse.”

While Johnson’s trilogy has no set release date or concrete details yet, there’s no doubt that fans will be on the lookout to see what he comes up with next.

Who cares? Star Wars is dead. Bury it. Next time there's a movie trailer, don't watch it. Consider this mercy.

Right? I'm looking at this article with Roundhead saying “I have no update at all,” and it's like of course you don't you fucking sped, you murdered a $75 million franchise.

$75 millions? Disney would be thrilled if it was only that little.
They spend 4 billions on that franchise alone, add to that another 2 billion for their theme park stuff. They are easily still deep down in the red numbers, despite the major success of their movies.

Disney will either postpone Johnson's trilogy indefinetely or drop it sometime early next year, blaming it on the Corona fallout. The third movie was nothing but damage control to take care of all the shit Johnson caused, no way in hell will they hand him over another chance to make such a mess.

Here's a novel idea: Allow someone to make an SW movie who actually enjoys the franchise the way it was.

Christ, I must be thinking of something else that was that amount. 6 billion, hell you could burn that amount like The Joker did and at least you'd be making a statement that way.

First of all, he's not making his own trilogy, no fucking way after all the drama associated with The Last Jedi.
Second, I don't think he even wants to.
Third, I love how the author wants his movies to be original but then also wants him to make movies that are part of a franchise with tons of lore and those movies better not contradict any of that lore or else.
Knives Out was actually an original movie and he clearly only did Star Wars to get funding for that, not to mention it was a hit so he doesn't need to take on a franchise movie to be profitable.

Translation: I created a thread on Reddit a few days before I wrote the article in support of my friend Rian.

Yeah but Rian is the one who wrote the script of TLJ.

Exactly and he already got paid so it doesn't matter if the "Rian trilogy" exists or not.
Ronald D. Moore and his writing team for example got paid to break the stories for a full season of a Star Wars tv show that doesn't exist outside of some test footage.

I don't want to see another Star Wars movie for as long as I live.

I have lived long enough to see not 1, but 2 trilogies get botched horribly.

I am at the point with Star Wars that I got to with Terminator. With Terminator, in my mind, nothing happened after T2. I've chosen to just erase all of it from my mind.

With Star Wars, nothing happened after Return of the Jedi. OK OK, I'll accept Rogue One as a companion piece/prequel to A New Hope, but every other movie can go away. But generally, the original movies and EU is the true canon to me.

IMO, Rian Johnson is not the biggest problem with Disney Wars. The big issue was that the entire trilogy was made for the sake of it. They had no end goal or plan. They should have come up with an outline, including the answers to the big questions, and made the directors work within that.

If they’re going to give Johnson a film, let him do one that’s independent of the main story, where he can do what he likes without crapping up the main characters. The Star Wars universe is infinite. And they need to stop getting hung up on the idea of trilogies. Give him one film. If it works, take it from there

There's only two options I'll give Disney when/if they go through with this:

- Give him a film with no pre-established lore beyond the basics, or have the existing lore be in the background because he cannot be trusted with it in full.

or

- Kill the film series entirely, focus on something else and make sure he stays far away from the franchise.

Star Wars needs to not be in movie form until at least 2029.

Disney can do their Mandalorian show, maybe a Kenobi show to keep Star Wars in the public eye. Then maybe a cartoon. No more than that. (I know, I know, no way Disney+ won't end up having a dozen or more shows by 2022)

But absolutely they need to take a decade break from the films at this point.

Rian Johnson does have talent, I would say his Star Wars movie is by far better looking than the two JJ Abrams and would even say Last Jedi has some of the best ideas in the newer movies however he is such a hack writer that is unable to successfully execute any of them, his characters do thing for poor reasons and any revelations have 0 impact on characters e.g. Rey finding out her parents were no ones, that should have been character defining and coloured the last part of the movie, she spend the first and second movie trying to find out who she was and why she was left on the planet alone but it has 0 impact on the rest of the movie and was reconned the movie after it.
