Rise of the Ninja Turtles - The newest Turtles iteration by Nickelodeon

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

The vibrancy of the colors makes it look like the animation should be great. But then the characters move and you just see the cheapness of it.
Yeah, like the style doesn't translate to animation at all. I would say Titmouse animated this, but when you look at the shorts they did for the 2012 series:
They look so much better than this. I'm guessing that if it is them, then they're working with a really low budget.

I chose to mute the audio for now and good God, the Back to the Sewers season was cheaply-animated and it still looks better than this. That makes me uncomfortable. Also it may be trying to be more like an anime apparently, but it's quite telling when you're getting Loonatics Unleashed flashbacks than you are Teen Titans/Avatar. (Went with the former more because of the TMNT 2012's director, Ciro Nieli.) It'll only go more anime than the OVA series only if they decide to bring in some goddamn fairy mascots as the Turtles go Super Sentai and then further expand on it with giant robots and moeblob waifus forming an idol group.

If I were to say anything positive about the trailer, however, I like that we now have a visual as to how big the Turtles are, mainly amongst each other. Like it's really weird to see Raph tower over and dwarf everybody (Mikey especially like holy shit I almost started cackling), but I think it's a neat idea.

I like that they tried to do different stuff with their heads and bandannas.

Even though I was an OG TMNT fan from the 80s, I'm not going to waste a lot of energy of this latest mutation (pun intended) of the franchise. However, I am going to say I've never liked this overtly simplistic cartoon style which has prevalence over every single new kids cartoon these days. Gendy Tarkovsky was the only person which could pull it off and the rest are just copies of a copy of a copy (I won't put Jamie Hewlett's style in here because I believe while simplistic, his work has a lot of finer details).

Few other things:
- Weren't the Turtles supposed to be like pet turtles which fell into a sewer drain and mutated? Now they're like four different species of turtles? What, were they taken from the Brooklyn Zoo? Granted, this can just be waved off with a simple plot device, but whatever. Dun like it.

- I get the idea of Black April, diversity and all that fee-fee good shit, but at the same time when you're making Splinter so much of a stereotyped caricature that you're making Mickey Rooney's character in Breakfast at Tiffany's seemed subtle and nuanced in comparison, YOU FAIL.

Are they from four different species in this incarnation? If so, I'm actually not all that mad with that idea, I think that'd be pretty interesting in how it can explain why they have naturally different fighting styles and personalities. I mean, far as I know, it was never actually confirmed that they were from the same brood.

But that's only with the assumption the writers and director will be smart about this incarnation and help balance out the flaws on the surface. It's nearly intolerable on the eyes and the voices are ehhhhh (and probably the theme song as well), but in the right hands the plot, character development, and humor will make up for it. That's just unfortunately going to take a bit of time to figure out since in just about all the TMNT series the first episodes/season are not all that strong, so it takes until about season two for things to really pick up, if then.

how many different turtles redesign do exist?

Off the top of my head shamelessly using this as a quick refresher, at least 12. Redesigns happen even mid-series, and I'm not even counting all of the comics, so there's probably about, oh, 20-or-so different designs of the Turtles.

And the best part is the multi-Turtle-verses are canon. So no matter how shitty an incarnation was or how much the fans want to forget (and one of the Shredders has tried to erase it from existence, once), it exists for any and all of the Turtles to come across. So yeah, I can see Rise bringing this up sometime down the road.

Meh. The animation looks alright. And the designs certainly are going to take some warming-up to, and Splinter doesn’t look nearly as bad animated as he did in the official artwork, and kind of reminds me of Iroh from Last Airbender, so that’s nice I guess. He just looks more like a mouse, rather than a rat.
I’ll probably check it out. Though I doubt I’ll enjoy it nearly as much as I did with the 2012 series which to me, was the definitive incarnation of the Turtles.
