Robert Englund spent about two decades playing the nightmare-inducing Freddy Krueger in the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movies, but he has since put his knife-hands in the closest, leaving the dream-invading racket behind. But Englund seems to have gotten a taste for the terror of Freddy again, and now that he’s reprised the role for a new Halloween episode of THE GOLDBERGS the actor revealed he may have it in him for one more bloody outing.

The actor was speaking with Access Online recently when he was asked about a possible reboot of the franchise, which seems almost inevitable at this point now that HALLOWEEN has opened to Marvel-level numbers. Though Englund is certain they would need a new actor he, almost off-handedly, said he thinks he might be able to give it one last go.

“I think they want to reboot the franchise, but they’re gonna need a new actor. They’re gonna need a new actor to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do eight of them. I might have one left in me… but yeah.”

Englund doesn’t seem all that sure he will be back for another outing, or even if he's up for doing another one if asked, and this is probably just another log on the “will they, won’t they” fire. He wasn’t willing to come back for GOLDBERGS either, that is until creator Adam Goldberg sent him a fan letter so touching Englund was swayed into donning the red and green sweater once more (via New York Post).

I’ve been very protective of the character for years … I said no to [series creator] Adam [Goldberg]. And then he sent me probably the most beautiful fan letter I ever received, telling me how much “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” meant to him. And then I started thinking about my fans, how it dovetails with the ’80s experience and this sort of retro memory play that “The Goldbergs” is about.

Englund did throw out an interesting idea for a new NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie, one that would find a different actor playing the character for each victim (and one that could see him returning). “Freddy is only alive in the imagination of his future victim,” he said back in July. “They would talk about it at a slumber party or in a locker room at school, or on the bus going home. All we know about this Fred Krueger is he wears a hat, wears a red and green striped sweater and has a clawed hand.”

Englund played Freddy starting with the very first NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in 1984, and through until FREDDY VS. JASON in 2003. The series was indeed rebooted in 2010 with Jackie Earle Haley in the role, and although the movie made some money it was too terrible to relive, so no more outings with that iteration are on the docket, thank god. But who knows, maybe getting into the makeup again after all these years reminded Englund of how much fun he had playing Freddy, and maybe that’s enough to get him back to murdering teenagers for one last go.

Please let it be Ash vs Freddy vs Jason and then properly send them all into retirement.

I love the Nightmare on Elm St. series but I think it's run it's course. Englund's idea about how Freddy would look different to each victim is pretty interesting though.
I thought Zach Ward (he was in FvJ as the brother that an hero'd) might make a good Freddy.
Still, I'm not sure I want a Freddy movie in CURRENT YEAR.

It could work, and honestly I think he deserves a proper send off...admittedly at this point he has had 2 awesome cappers to his series (New Nightmare and Freddy vs Jason) and the recent Halloween has shown its possible to do the whole "go back to absolute basics and make a proper successor to the original" thing. It just needs a competent director and writer who are actual fucking fans of the originals and who wont be diddled around by idiot producers demanding stupid shit because of what the marketing intern told them.

Basically a "new" New Nightmare but set in the canon of the movies (well....first few movies....well first movie at the very least) that gives him one last hurrah before he perma-retires

I liked the Halloween sequel-reboot a lot so I'm game for one last Nightmare film with Englund. It'd be nice to see a soft-revival of the slasher genre, even if it amounts to just a small handful of films. Another crossover with Jason would be ideal.

Now Heather Langenkamp says that she's down for another Nightmare on Elm Street:

With Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green's direct sequel to John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN blazing up the box-office, I'm thinking it's only a matter of time before some of our other favorite franchise get new installments. At least I hope so. And while we're at it, I hope whatever the next franchise on the block is, they keep the original films heroine.

Specifically, I think you all know that I'm talking about Heather Langenkamp and the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series. And it looks like Langenkamp feels the same way. In fact, the scream queen just opened up to EW about her enthusiasm for another Nightmare on Elm Street.

Heather Langenkamp:

I’m sitting here like any other scream queen in Hollywood, hoping that they revive their franchise. I’m not alone! I know of lots of other horror heroines who have this little bit of spring in their step thinking about the chance of perhaps being in [new versions of] the movies that they helped make famous as young people. It’s kind of crazy, but it’s definitely something I would love to do.

Does that mean there's a chance that she's heard rumblings about such a reboot/sequel? Unfortunately, it seems like that's not the case.

I haven’t [heard anything about a new film]. I certainly keep up with friends at New Line Cinema, and so I would expect if Warner Bros. or New Line Cinema — whoever — would put something like that together, I would imagine that I would know. So, the fact that I don’t know leads me to believe that it’s probably not in the works.

Of course, I love the character so much, and she’s definitely part of me, and as I grow old, she grows old inside. Every time Wes Craven used to call, and ask if I would be interested in playing Nancy one last time, I would often be incredibly excited about it. But I don’t know what forces in Hollywood are planning on that remake, or that rematch between Nancy and Freddy. I’m like my own fans. I just think, Wow, that would be neat!

Personally, as you might imagine, I would give my first born child to see a new entry in the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series with Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp returning. Whether or not we will ever see such a flick may be merely a fanboy's wet dream, but hell, you never know! How bad do you want another NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET flick? Let us know below!

In Wes Craven's classic slasher film:

Several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) solve the puzzle before it's too late?

Written and directed by Wes Craven, the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was produced by Robert Shaye and starred Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Amanda Wyss, Jsu Garcia, Robert Englund and Johnny Depp in his film debut.

It is funny though.

The only Nightmare movies I like are the 1st one, Dream Warriors, and New Nightmare.

Aside from Freddy, what do they all have in common?

Heather Langenkamp.

I'm not saying she's the key to success for a Nightmare film, but much like Sydney and Laurie are for their franchises, Nancy served well as the protagonist/guiding force for the Elm Street series.
