Well, Weird Al was protected by Fair Use for his music parodies, but he always asked the artists before hand as a professional courtesy.

Yes, you can make the parody, but if you're both in the same industry, it seems polite to go and ask before hand and respecting their wishes if they say no because that can bite you in the ass in the end.

Yeah, yeah. Fair Use is a thing, but there's a thing called being professional.

I get the tracing aspect being bad, but why do people care so much about fictional characters being mocked?

Because they lack the testosterone to make a flash cartoon universe themselves, so they must take ownership over someone else's summer boy project since their creative drive died as quickly as Homestar Runner.

I see that some fans are upset because RC didn't ask for permission to use these characters and the original creators didn't receive any money for it. Tracing aside, do you have to ask if it's for a parody? If not, are you still supposed to pay them? I could have sworn we went over this like two years ago with IHE when he had to explain how copyrights work after his channel got hit.

No to both of those questions.

Do these speds think Robot Chicken gets permission to mock everything they've go after?
No one's going to endorse a vulgar parody of their ongoing show for toddlers.

Jesus christ, Homestar Runner, Robot Chicken, and somebody mentioning previous salt involving Team Fortress 2?
I might as well put my thoughts out through things I honestly haven't thought about in years.
That skit was Epic Movie tier quality; srsly, it's as bad as the Cat Woman movie. Ya rly, it was that much of an epic fail. Even Chris Bores could do a better job than this. If I wanted to see someone embarrass themselves like this, I'd just watch R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet. A winner is not you, Seth Green.
And the salt is as just as much a fail as the skit. These clowns should've just ignore it and do something more productive, like watching the Venture Bros. episode.

This sketch DOES seem fairly well-researched. They’ve got several things in there that indicate that whoever wrote it is at least somewhat familiar with Homestar Runner lore. They reference Strong Badia, the common question of how Strong Bad types with boxing gloves, and Homsar (a character who rarely shows up outside of easter eggs).

That's not really "well researched." I could look up a character, any character really, and see things like "Oh Goku's real name is Kakarot" and that doesn't really qualify myself as well researched.

:autism:.

That or it's okay when these people mock characters, but not people like Seth Green. I'd be more than happy if they just complained about asset stealing, which is a problem, but but at the same time, a) RC uses action figures of pre-existing characters and no one's complained about that, and b) have used assets from video games (like the Ryu/Chun-Li abuse segment) and no one complained then either.

Maybe semi-irrelevant web shorts strike a chord more than video games, I guess.

By the standards some cartoon parodies use, that’s well-researched. Remember that time South Park tried to parody Inception but completely missed the mark because all they did was watch a CollegeHumor spoof?

But at the same time, they label Strong Bad as a Mexican, despite the fact his accent has been non-existent since the early days of the site.
