To be perfectly honest, I was pretty excited when I saw it. Rocko is my favorite classic Nicktoon, which invariably means I'll be disappointed. Anyone looking for a modern-day reboot of a 24-year-old cartoon to live up to 24 years of being a cult favorite probably will. Parts of it looked a bit cringy, but given that it's the original writers, animators, and voice actors, I trust it'll be handled decently well.

So was Heffer having an on-camera orgasm, Rocko yanking on the balls of an animal in the woods, Rocko working for a phone sex company, every time Mrs. Bighead tried to seduce Rocko, and the infamous No Tell Motel scene. God knows what else there is I've forgotten.

The problem is Nickelodeon's new ideas are shit.

I've always wondered why, if it's apparently mostly nostalgia that attracts people to these old properties, I can marathon Rocko (which I didn't grow up with btw) but can't stand anything Nickelodeon puts out now. It could be a bias (though they've had some good shows as of late), could be autism, I don't know. Maybe it's because Rocko skewed towards adults in its humor and writing anyway.

There was nothing secret about the show's mature humor. It was basically an Adult Swim show masquerading as a NickToon.

I remember this show confusing the hell out of me as a kid, it always seemed like there was something I wasn't getting and some of the imagery was so surreal. It wasn't as in your face crazy as ren and stimpy but it was way ahead of its time. This and are you afraid of the dark were my favorite of that line up.

Management must have changed during the latter half of the 90's because Angry Beavers was ultimately a lot tamer than Rocko's Modern Life and (especially) Ren and Stimpy, and everything that came after was even tamer still, except for Invader Zim. I don't know what happened after that point, but bringing back Rocko's Modern Life, and Invader Zim, and Hey Arnold in the form of TV movies suggests they haven't had any real big successes since that time.

Spongebob has been their sole massive success in the meantime, and it's still strong (I think?), but I'm not sure it'll hold out forever. At Spongebob's peak in the 2000s, Nickelodeon was massively dismissive of their 90s properties; Rocko (and I mean all the "classic" Nicktoons, but I'm most familiar with Rocko) had no home releases aside from the out of print VHS ones, and even when there was a lot of demand, the most they did were the on-demand DVD-R releases through Amazon. When Rocko got aired, it was usually in the graveyard slot on one of their digital cable channels because "the fuck else do we put here lol". Even Rugrats, which was the Spongebob before Spongebob, was ignored past its sell-by date.

I wonder if the issue is that there's no longer any boundaries on content. You can say almost anything you want on TV now, and most cable networks will even let you get away with tits if it's past a certain time of day, so how can a show push boundaries when there are none? Rocko was so racy because no one expected that shit from a cartoon. Now that it's standard, you don't have to be clever with your adult humor, writing gets dumber and cruder, etc. I dunno if that's related any, but it is something I wonder about.

I heard that they wanted to get all of the technology jokes out of the way in the trailer.

I'm definitely excited for what's to come. Rocko and Heffer sound exactly like their old selves, and I had a good laugh at the O-Watch and iPhone 10 jokes. Moreover, it's really refreshing to see that they literally picked up right where they left off (such as the rocket in Rocko's house).
