How 4Chan /pol/ hasn't collapsed under its own hubris yet will forever amaze me given how much at odds everyone is on that board compared to all the others.

I've been visiting for happenings and news for years.. Actual discussion is impossible there due to real and imagined shills. I didn't think mods had gotten so brazen with their control of the board. After this I think I'm done visiting 4chan altogether

99% of people are not important enough to be spied on. Even if accept that agencys like the NSA are collecting everything everyone does online, there's way way way too much info to sort through in a lifetime. I know the point is they shouldn't even have that info to begin with, which I agree. But you can't live your life thinking everything and everyone is compromised, You'll go insane trying to figure out who's a shill, who's your friend, what places are compromised, what apps/os/software are safe and private.

Tellingly, the only other board that doesn't accept janitor applications aside from /pol/ is /b/
4chan has had a compromised mod team for ages, at least on /pol/ and /b/, the two most infamous boards.
Really, 4chan has been a borderline normie-tier site for years now. It's just a slightly edgier version of Reddit at this point, and /pol/ is only kept around as a containment board.

True, but I think the nature of the surveillance does mean that you have something to worry about. Just because of the sheer volume of data that needs to be examined, they are going to need to have filters that start fairly broad and those filters will throw up false positives. The banal reality is that a lot of people will end up with tags and in the ‘interesting’ pile when they aren’t, just because of how that works.
Even now, things like that happen - there’s been a few a stories about some innocent being on a no fly or grab list because they had the same name as Ali McTerroristson. Think how much of that will happen when you’re processing billions of data points.
In some ways, actual humans sifting through data is more discerning, because our pattern recognition ability still beats computers in that area. The need for humans to sift also restricts the amount of data collected to Something reasonable which restricts it to things that are relevant.
How many people are registered users here? A few tens of thousand? Shove them all on one list. That’s one tag. Cross reference with something else, Make a few off colour jokes on another board, That’s another tag. The sifter is now picking you up from two places and maybe now somebody is looking at you. I’d assume all websites everywhere are or are potentially compromised and I don’t think that’s unreasonable. When it comes to people you interact with them I think yeah, that’s not a rabbit hole you can go down and remain a happy person. You’ll drive yourself mad.
