RTS and Turn Based Strategy Sperging -

I am going to preface this post by saying, I like the idea of fucking over the French in every form of RTS possible.

I couldn't find a thread about this, but I figured we needed a thread on the wonders such as the C&C, Civilization and other similar titles.

Turn-based Strategy, mainly tactical RPGs, are the shit. Never managed to get into RTS, though.

I never really got into civilization, I was always into other games like the Total War franchise, Age of Empires and Empire at War. I always favored RTS for what I can only call "realism". I got burnt by civ when my modern infantry got murdered by some swordsmen, and I wasn't used to the format and the intricate menus and why despite my conquest I was losing money. That being said I managed to grasp a rudimentary understanding of the total wars long term campaign system, particularly the Empire and Napoleon entries.

This is my favorite console RTS and i am really excited for the squeal.

Only got to play SC and SC2.
Could only get to silver rank in SC2.

I used to play Civ IV a lot, now I play Civ V more often.
Is it wrong for me to say that I'm glad doom stacks are a thing of the past?

I'm a big fan of C&C, and starcraft. Only for story though. I'm atrocious at multi-player.

Star Wars: Empire at War and Forces of Corruption are my favorite RTS games. I remember downloading mods for them and having a blast.

I also remember playing Age of Empires II when I was younger. Halo Wars was also pretty good, but it's been a long time since I played that game. Can't wait for Halo Wars 2 to come out!

Star Wars: Empire at War and Forces of Corruption are my favorite RTS games. I remember downloading mods for them and having a blast.

That one was one of my favorites. I loved the space battles, but the land battles were shit.

I love Paradox Interactive's games especially Crusader Kings II. I have established the kingdom of Ireland multiple times. Established the Empire of Hispania as Leon, conquered the Middle East as the Ilkhanate, established the Holy Roman Empire as Charlemagne and other such fun accomplishments.

Let me preface my post by saying that AirMech is a pretty damn awesome game. When I first saw it, it gave me Herzog Zwei vibes (it actually did take cues from Herzog too) so I wanted to download it as soon as I could. I started with that pilot that gets more EXP (I forget their names) and a Striker mech which I think is my favorite for being the starter mech - not only because it's reminiscent of Herzog, but also the laser sword is pretty cool and it really seems to pound away at enemies with the right units aiding it.

Technically Airmech aka Herzog Drei is presented as a MOBA, meaning shit is streamlined and hero-focused, with creeps spawning from the main base like you'd expect in Dota. However, I compared it to Herzog Zwei because of how you can summon units directly, issue commands, and even give them airlifts.

I'm so glad I finally figured out how to use my old controller with this game though.

I grew up on the CnC games: Red Alert, RA2, Tiberian Sun, etc. My friend in middle school was a diehard -craft fan and we had long, spergy arguments about which series was better. I preferred CnC cause I liked the alternate-history/alternate-future angle of the whole series. Granted, the series has since turned to shit. RA3 was an embarrassment. I wasn't a fan of the "let's steal some cred from CoD" Generals either.

I played Civ for a while, but then found the EU games. I played the shit out of EU3, 4, and CK2. Some of my favorite games were when I played as Venice and controlled an empire from the Mediterranean to the south pacific and paid Austria to fight for me in Europe or when I played as Russia and broke up the HRE...but Paradox's DLC strategy is getting a little wearying. I stop playing the games for a couple of months only to return to find another 40$ of DLC is out. CK2, especially, is getting really uncomfortably bloated and I've heard that EU4 is nigh-unplayable if you don't have the Common Sense DLC.

I also really loved the Total War series before the remakes (Rome II, Shogun II) and the post-medieval ones (Empire/Napoleon).

I actually like Ra3. It's like the Plan 9 from Outer Space of Rts. And come on, George Takei as a Japanese emperor.

Distant Worlds is a pretty great space 4x if you can get past the pricetag it still carries. I especially love how it actually does merchants properly, where it's a private sector that is instead taxxed by your governemnt, and you need to send patrols on the most important trade lanes if you care enough. Plus it has great automation for stuff you can't be assed to micromanage. That fact that you can set up empires to be different ages is great as well, as some can be anchient crumbling empires, some can be the regional power in their prime, others can be the upstart threat to the galactic blance, and lots of combinations in between, if you so choose.

Blood Bowl is also a permanent addiction of mine, which is essentially Warhammer Fantasy Football. It's a boardgame from back when Games Workshop had good ideas where all the warhammer fantasy races competed in a blood sport that was half american football, half a boxing match. Has persistant players and permadeath as it was geared around league play. There's a Video Game version that's been out for quite awhile that's getting a sequel in Sept, and the freeware version on a site called FUMBBL. On which I've been trying to organize a league for.
