Hand-drawn animation seems to be a lost art in the West.
At least video games brought us Cuphead. That has more soul in one frame than all the 3D reboots we're getting. Too bad it'll probably take MDHD another 10 years to complete another game like it. :heart-empty:

I grew up with Rugrats and while the models look horrible the nostalgic music hit me like a freight train. From the previews I don't think it's as bad as, say, the Powerpuff Girls reboot but I've not got my hopes up.

See if this was a one off special meant to commemorate the nicktoons 30th anniversary (Judas priest do I feel old) the way hey Arnold the jungle movie, static cling or enter the florpus was. Then maybe I could understand it being made. Nick expects a show exclusive to their own streaming service to tide people over for a whole season. Those specials aren't perfect but at least they had reasons to exist, jungle movie was something the creator had wanted to do for years, enter the Florpus ....maybe but with Vasquez you never know. He's flip flopped back and forth between hating zim and the rep he's gotten from it to loving it.

The only possible exception is static cling since that special at times feels like Joe Murray is directly telling the target audience "the 90s are over, accept it. Me bringing back a show I worked on 20 years ago isn't gonna make everything 1995 again. "
Jhonen never hated working on Zim, that was a rumor spread by a pissy ex co worker who shit talked about him on Invader Zim forums back in the day.

Rugrats was already "over with"

Back in the day, I didn't like it when the show was "done with" because of that "all grown up" series, even if the latter wasn't so bad.

Then Nickelodeon went to hours and hours of Rocket Power reruns.

They turned Lou into an old Tommy Tooter style faggot. Chaz is now a hipster. Betty is full on lesbian. They canned the original VAs for the adult characters. I'm sure grandma Minka and grandpa Boris are out of the picture. Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't turn Spike into a dog of transgender experience.
Here's the new opening, which completely turned Suzie into a token character.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made Howard trans knowing how current year is.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed it's a remake of one of the earliest episodes. But the side-by-side comparison really hammers home how beat for beat it is. Which is weird because the rest of the promotional material thus far doesn't seem to include any other remade episodes.

Not feeling the change with Grandpa Lou. I liked him better as just a regular old man that slept constantly instead of being quirky grandpa.
It would be nice instead of reinventing the wheel that they would instead do Rugrats the next generation. That babies are now the grownups and have babies of their own. They already did all AGU, now take them all the way. This will reset the board for them to add in more characters.

jungle movie was something the creator had wanted to do for years
I'm so glad Craig Bartlett finally got to make The Jungle Movie. It was what he originally wanted to do for the Hey Arnold movie, but retarded Nick execs didn't think that Arnold finding and meeting his long lost parents would make enough money at the box office. So they made what was supposed to be a TV movie into a theatrical release, that flopped hard, and canned The Jungle Movie mid-production.

Jhonen's even admitted that both himself and Nick have tried to make more Zim over the years, but the timing just didn't line up right, with either Jhonen busy on other projects, or Nick being more interesting in dedicating money towards other projects. If Jhonen really hated Zim he wouldn't have gotten it revived in the form of a comic before pre-production of Enter the Florpus began (probably).

I kind of feel bad for saying this, because I've always been against randomly making previously *normal* already introduced characters "more inclusive," after the fact, but I don't really think this applies in making Phil and Lil's mom a lesbian... Even back when I was a kid, and had no real idea what a lesbian even was, this was a 'joke' going around. And Phil and Lil's mom clearly never gave a shit about the beta male who she just used to make children.

I'm actually genuinely curious as to whether or not Howard is going to be a part of this new Rugrats at all. (I suspect he won't be, and no real loss.) Everything I've seen says that Betty's going to be a single lesbian mom who don't need no man.

Obvious lesson though, don't ever be a cuck for an obvious lesbian.

The fact that a couple of the episodes are remakes of older ones scares me. It makes me think the writers think the series can't carry out on it's own. As said before if they have creative ideas I can look past the animation and different voice acting. But take advantage of having the Rugrats in a another generation. Have Angelica videocall Drew on his cell at work or something.

I also wish they had a sequel series rather than a flat out remake. They could of done something like Tommy having a kid who's scared like Chuckie and Chuckie has a brave kid. Angelica has a son or daughter who is a carbon copy of herself. It would suck that Lou and Spike would be dead but they would have replacements.

As for Betty being a lesbian in this version; it doesn't surprise me. Fans often joked she was in the original. I'm okay with having a gay character but couldn't it have been an original character instead? I wonder if were get a trans character. If Howard does appear he'll probably be married to some guy conforming he's gay.

There's something that really looks off about the character's faces to me, they look waxy and lifeless, these are not character designs that translate well into 3D at all.

I wish it was a sequel as well but if it was going to be this terrible CGI it's just as well that it's not.

But it's a bit surprising because "Rugrats: The Next Generation" was the most obvious idea, instead they took the far lazier approach.

These designs in general don't work not just in CG, but in real life either. It always looks weird whenever they make merchandise, and it looks even weirder in CGI.

What I'm surprised is just how haphazzard the CGI quality is with the show, like some things, like the carpet, are borderline photorealistic, but then other objects are stylized and then you mix in the characters and it's just an outright clusterfuck that really hurts the eyes for prolonged periods.

Season 1 of the rugrats was really magical. The animation was really weird and disjointed but the voice acting was impeccable for adults voicing infants and one child. This was just pale in comparison.
That clip looks worse than even amateur Source Filmmaker shitposts. Just look at how the clown lamp explodes:

new rugrats clown lamp breaking.gif

It looks like every single piece breaking apart was animated by hand, clumsily trying to make the clown breaking apart more dramatic. Like, surely you could get better results by just recording that in Gmod with a gust of wind blowing the fragments towards the camera, and setting gravity a little bit low.
