I could see different types of faunus getting treated better or worse depending on their type adding a whole new layer to the racism angle. Like, imagine if humans treated more "tamed" Faunus- Rabbits, cats, dogs, birds, etc.- better because they tended to be more submissive, docile, and less likely to fight back if treated badly. On the other hand, more "Feral" Faunus- bulls, tigers, alligators, bears, etc.- get treated far more harshly due to being stronger, more prideful, and more likely to get aggressive and fight back.Bunny faunus getting special treatment would bring depth to the whole "muh racism" depiction, but that would require effort that Beavis and Butthead can't bring.
Edited because i fucked up the code.
So a tiger faunus is more likely to get carted off to the dust mines after commiting a crime than a hamster faunus would, because the tiger faunus is seen as more of a threat. On the other hand, a bunny faunus might be able to work their way into human society (ie, become a top scientist) since they would be perceived as less threatening than most faunus. Maybe this could even effect dynamics within the faunus communities, where Tamed Faunus partners are seen as more desirable since there's a higher chance that your children would turn out to be one and thus treated better/given a chance to integrate.
This could also give a further wedge between Adam and Blake- she was already treated better than most faunus because she was a cat (let alone the princess part), while Adam, a bull, was treated like absolute shit because not only was he a faunus, he was one of the "dangerous" kinds. He has every right to be bitter while she doesn't.
It could be a reflection of historical colorism- where the lighter-skinned you were, the less of a threat you appeared to be and were more likely to be tolerated within white society, and lighter-skinned partners and children were seen as very desirable.
But like you said, Dumb and Dumber don't have the nuance to pull off a layered story like that. What a shame, since you could really do some interesting things with it. Apologies for the rambling, it just so happens that I love to write and especially worldbuild and it always bums me out to see interesting ideas completely go to waste.
