These are all entirely plausible that he could have been stationed in Japan and all he did was clean lunch trays. It's technically correct that he could be called a veteran by the measure of it and collect benefits from that sort of service. He received an other than honorable discharge, which pretty much removes any and all benefits he could get through the VA. He most certainly cannot get the GI Bill benefits for college, or medical unless he was deployed and received some type of injury during that deployment (in this case, a deployment is something like Bahrain or Kuwait where we stage out of, or an actual combat zone). I believe he may also be entitled to benefits for service-connected disabilities, such as hearing loss (if he was in a motor pool for at least a year, it's an automatic 10% disability rating from the VA because hearing loss is assumed).

Not completely true. You can get GI Bill benefits for other discharge statuses, but it's on a case-by-case basis. The most common is medical separations, which tend to not be honorable.
