The SR3 Remaster gave me a much better appreciation for the game, oddly. The writing and pacing issues are still there (mitigated somewhat if you take a specific approach to the missions, but that still means an incredibly linear story experience) but I'm reminded of how much fun it was to run around Steelport.

I absolutely adored SR4 - the Christmas DLC was strangely moving for a game with fucking dildos and fart jokes - and admit SR2 was a grander experience, but The Third will always be kind of special.

I loved the Christmas DLC of Saints Row IV. Best Christmas special I've ever watched. The North Pole can drag out a bit, but the writing saves it. Enter the Dominatrix was a laugh and a half. The deleted scenes and commentary approach was meta genius. Especially since Saints Row IV was originally conceived as an April Fool's joke.

Saints Row IV is my favorite superhero, open world game. One of the few games where I've legitimately paused to contain my laughter. Best writing and lore development yet.

IdolNinja's cancer has returned in a bad way and he's going to spend the rest of his life working on the Saints Row 2 patch for PC. And Volition is committed to finishing it after he passes, even hiring new programmers for it. He also teases Saints Row V a bit.

Absolute fucking legend.
SR2 was everything GTA IV should've been for me, and I never got to play the 360/actually competent version.
I absolutely appreciate his effort.

I'm a fan of the GTA series. If it wasn't for GTA, I would had never been introduced to such titles like Saints Row. However, I find Saints Row to be ahead of the curve compared to GTA.

Saints Row being a "knock-off" of San Andreas but improves on every aspect SA brought to the table. Shooting was refined, scope was realistic and confined, story was engaging, customization was spades better than San Andreas. Certainly more stable than San Andreas. The world was massive but lacked dead space because of interiors and activities.

Saints Row 2's edge over IV was its tonal shift with its world. IV was hailed for being a serious crime story with little humor in between. Saints Row 2 knew when to let the player have fun in Stilwater. I'm referring to the activities. Insurance Fraud and Septic Tank remain my favorite side missions in the whole series.

Setting up a thread for Saints Row discussion and nostalgiaing since the franchise has seen a revival of interest since Nintendo agreed to let ports of Saints Row 3 and 4 onto the Nintendo Switch.

Favorite game? Favorite character? Best Girl (Kenzie of course)? Also, should Nintendo front the money to port over Saints Row 1 and 2 or at least, remake them in line with Saints Row 3-4?

Saint's Row started out as a GTA clone, it arguably hit it's peak with 2, maybe 3 (definitely 3 had the bigger budget so they could do a lot more with it in terms of set pieces and visuals) although by 3 we already saw the trend of them going a bit too wacky... then we had 4 and by that point we were so far off we couldn't even see the reservation anymore. Can't imagine what a 5 would have looked like.

It's stuck between Saints Row (1) and Saints Row IV because of their humor.

3 was ok back in the day but replaying the remaster was rough. Didn't really care for anything else other than Burt Reynolds cameo.
Also the reupped textures while nice, conflict too much with the player character textures since they're basically the same that they were on the original release.


I think 4 is a stronger game but it's a superhero game so it really doesn't fit with the others other than Gat Out of Hell.

Played the original although I sadly never beat it, but I played and beat 2, 3 and 4.

It's tough to pick between 2 and 3 as favorite, 3 is of course much more polished and better looking than 2, but I really loved all the crazy easter eggs you could find in 2, especially out in the ocean.

4 is fun and funny but of course they arguably took it too far.

Favorite character would be Kenzie.

I started with 3, really liked it, although I wish there was a way to have more people in co-op.
I've played a bit of SR2, I liked the level of customization.
I played SR4, hated it, I think it was the wrong direction for the franchise. The super powers broke the open world, there was no reason to use the vehicles anymore which is a shame because I loved the driving in SR3.
I tried Gat out of Hell and didn't get past a couple of missions because I didn't want to get through the same shit again.

4 was the most fun I had with a game's basic systems, running around an open world with those mobility powers was incredibly satisfying despite the paperthin depth to the rest of the experience, I'm still wanting to replay it even after 100%ing the collectables.

This is actually something that's a problem in a lot of sandbox games. The first game this occurred in was GTA3, which they thankfully improved on with Vice City in acquiring properties during the second half of the game. And again with San Andreas with all of the hundreds of things money was used for.

However starting with GTA4 Sandbox games began to get diluted with money. In GTA4 barring some of the more mild things like ingame food, hospital visits/police and a few other things. The only thing you spent money on was weapons. And even with that about halfway through the game you'd usually acquire weapons like the M4 which were default better than anything else. It didn't help that hospital visits didn't confiscate your weapons anymore so you basically never had to start from 0 unless you got busted.

After GTA4 basically set the mold for the modern sandbox game, games tended to follow it's example. In SR3 all you spent money on was guns and upgrades for your character. And again the same problem occurred where halfway through the game you'd get basically everything you wanted and money became a non-issue. In SR5 I only ever used money on upgrading. In some other popular sandbox titles like Red Faction Guerrilla, and Just Cause 2 pretty much the only things you could spend money on were weapons or vehicles. There are only a few notable exceptions to this like some of the Assassins Creed games like Brotherhood and Black Flag. Where you have an Assassins Guild/properties and a ship respectively you can spend money on upgrading throughout the game. And in those games money management is far more important and as a result you find yourself spending and gaining money constantly.

So I just spend cash/cache on clothing to accessorize and built up a decent size wardrobe to dress up the Boss in along with modifying his looks based on my whims.

Does anyone remember the easter eggs you could find out in the ocean in SR2?

You could find a pirate ship wreck, a Nessie skeleton, a piece of the lost city of Atlantis, an island with the Volition logo in a cave and maybe a few other things, but that's what I remember the most.

Playing on coop with the boss dialed in to look and dress just like me always got the best reactions and screenshots from my irl friends.

The developers said in interviews it was a conscious decision to make the player absurdly powerful at the start of the game. Which I feel was a mistake to be honest since one of the best aspects of SR2 was how you gradually progression felt because all of the best weapons were unlocked by fully completing activities. It genuinely felt really encouraging to do most of them as a result.

I feel over-focusing on drop in/out coop was also responsible for that since they wanted players to do missions together without needing to unlock them.
