I like the salt mines just the way they are. They are my favorite thing about the forum.
I'll be honest, the Trump thread is the only reason I post in this sub-forum. If the thread was moved to say, Deep Thoughts, I wouldn't even care about the Salt Mine.
Alternate take, I like the salt mine how it is.
If you as a forum member are annoyed at someone shitting up a thread, express that. I mean you risk further shitting up the thread by being salty about salt in the salt mine, but 1) that's kind of thematically appropriate, 2) community moderation is probably the better way to control the quality of the forums.
I think we risk a lot of bad outcomes if we try to force a forum in a particular direction, and worse still if we set a precedent for the administration tightly controlling the direction of the forum. Simply put I think we need a system of mutual bullying to keep each other in check.
If you see something you don't like, call it out. You might find that people agree with you, and then the vexing person will hopefully stop, or you might find they don't agree. I think such a method will yield much more natural and agreeable results then just tightening the rules. Also has the potential to be pretty funny.

Rename the Trump thread "Donald Trump critics & trolls" move it into community watch and then nuke salt mine altogether. It's quickly becoming Entersphere 2.0.

The shittiest thing about the board to me is how people can't distinguish between over-the-top reactions that are worthy of being mocked, and simple irritation at something not going the way they want it to (usually politically). I think this catalyzes a lot of slapfights because the thread becomes about laughing at how dumb some fairly mainstream political belief is, rather than how someone is acting like a monkey on Twitter.
