Since he has passed away, one can only wonder who might take up the reigns as president of Nintendo. Still, RIP Iwata. He will be remembered as president of Nintendo and to some, as a guy that did work on some games like Earthbound and Balloon Fight.

Iwata was actually a very competent programmer.
During the development of Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, the people at Game Freak were banging their heads on the wall trying to get the region of Johto onto a 2 MB cartridge.
Nintendo decided to send one of their best programmers, Iwata, to help them compress the game. After completely redeveloping and redefining the code, Game Freak had so much space that they didn't know what to do with it. This is why Kanto was placed in the game.
It's extremely sad what has happened today, and he will be missed by many.
