If you want to know why, basically all women are treated like children under Saudi Arabian law. No matter how old they are, they have a male "guardian" (father, husband, or even son) who is in charge of everything; whether they can work, leave the country, get medical treatment, you name it. The driving ban is just an extension of this, meant to keep women trapped and dependent on men because otherwise they'd flee for the hills.

Oh, and by the way, Saudi Arabia retains its membership on the UN Human Rights Council. Nice.

Actually... Saudi Arabia has the one of the highest road accident death tolls in the world. It turns out that when you give a population of angry, severely sexually repressed young men access to sport cars, they go a little crazy.

Oh, and because there's so few entertainment venues in Saudi Arabia (no movie theaters, clubs, bars, etc), young men turn to street races and drifting.
One of these days, the government will look at this, wonder "Why even bother with cars?" and ban everyone from driving them.

And in reading the article, I came across this comment:
Great idea.
Keep death off the roads.
Ignoring the obvious "joke" here, this guy clearly doesn't get the amount of deaths that occur even without the cause of women behind the wheel. It's why, tradition or not, their government should probably realize that allowing their male population to keep pulling this BS is not a good thing to allow to run rampant.

I wanted to crack a joke about our driving skills here, but... I can't. This is just too sad.

(Probable real reason: If women could drive, they could get out of there!) :(
Hell, the fact the men don't drive the hell outta there leads me to believe something else is going on that their government's not being entirely truthful about.

They think its empowering.

Clearly not being able to show one's face and drive is empowering, while vile white men saying you are pretty is oppressive.
The saddest part is that there are actually Saudi women who defend the driving ban and the guardian system, claiming that it keeps them safe and that they are more respected than Western women. While many Saudi women are outraged at their status and desperately want change, there are still a lot of them who are just complacent sheep and buy into all of the bullshit about them being "protected."

Oh, and I remember reading a post where a Saudi woman said she doesn't care about not being able to drive because she has a chauffeur that takes her everywhere (this is really widespread, btw; because women can't drive their husbands/fathers often have a chauffeur on retainer if they're wealthy enough). And people were like "Okay, but what about all those women who can't hire chauffeurs, or their male family members won't let them?"

It makes me sad to type this, but knowing Saudi Arabia, maybe they ARE safer with a man always around.
