There are several people on tumblr who claim to be schizophrenic or psychotic and they rarely seem to understand what schizophrenia actually is. It is not a disease of geniuses, in fact it is correlated with lower IQ than average. 51% of schizophrenics have metabolic syndrome https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19220180. And there are negative symptoms which are things like lack of motivation and inability to feel pleasure. Nonetheless tumblrinas seek to romanticize schizophrenia and rarely acknowledge what it actually is like.

My best friend from highschool had it start in grade 12 and it caused her to miss a third of the year and be unable to fill out her university application. At the moment she seems to have it under control but it has only been the first year so far.

I'll spoil my power leveling here but I know tumblr loves to play up mental illness and how fun it is, but when they hit close to home I get more upset than I should.

This is an awful disorder and it's just sick how people want to treat it as something to enjoy.

nearly married a girl who was just the best human being I've ever met the disorder caused her a lot of problems and she sabotaged us to a point it couldn't be fixed. Watching someone destroy themselves to keep you away from them isn't something I'd wish on anyone, but those who think it's a game I'd love to see them go one day with what I put up with. And aside her romantic partners it tore apart friends familes etc, knowing where it takes you just couldn't let people stay around even dependant on them. Now I'm legit triggered! hahah

Doing this belittles people with actual schizophrenia. When you do this, you portray all schizophrenics as people who are just making it up for attention.

Interestingly my friend became more nice after her diagnosis. Likely because she didn't want people to perceive her as crazy.

It's literally around 50% for those who have it, attempts and self medication/drug use rates even higher.

Even proper medication and good mental health support life is rather nasty. Even the newest gen of drugs is rather rough on the liver. While those who were on long term high dose of lithium are at a much reduced quality of life as well as life span.

Tumblrinas love to fetishize all mental illness. In fact, this board will be interested to know that they love to self-diagnose with autism, and in fact, there is an autism gender.

But everything - depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, PTSD, DID (a huge one, especially when "headmates" get involved), gender dysphoria (I forget the actual DSM term for this), bipolar, BPD, ASPD, and on and on and on....

I especially hate the "self-diagnosis" community. They parade around the cost of doctor's visits as the reason they can't get diagnosed, despite the fact that most are high school and college students and could easily see a counselor at their school... not to mention that most are under 26 and on their parents' insurance anyway... or the fact that a visit is not going to be much over $100 which is not all that much to save up for.

Ugh. I have a handful of actual, real, diagnosed, medicated problems and it drives me nuts.

That's true, it's nasty stuff, but chubby and no voices beats hearing and or seeing things.
Oddly for person I know who was on damn near legal limit dose it killed their appeitite though with some weight gain. Granted they were a twig pre meds so they looked normal on it. But a handful of french fries or an egg and toast would be a days intake.

I had a childhood friend who turned out to have schizoaffective disorder later in life. She's been in jail, been addicted to alcohol and other drugs, and been in and out of psych wards. Even with medication she lacks the ability to take proper care of herself. Why anyone would want to diagnose themselves with this is beyond me.

I had an internet stalker (who probably would have been an IRL stalker if she could get on a plane to cross the Atlantic) who claimed to be schizotypical, but she wore is as a badge of pride and seemed to be in love with the illness and the suffering she received. Her stories of her daily hardships made me sympathetic to her at first, because of course I don't want to be seen as a bad person. She said she was also autistic, but schizoid disorders and autism are very rarely ever comorbid. I pointed this out to her after I was informed of this by a biology major of this, and suggested perhaps she had something closer to BPD, and she flipped out and called me and compared me to a Holocaust denier. When I blocked her, she started tracking down pretty much every single account I'd made on any website ever and sent me creepy, threatening messages.

Point was, she was in love with schizophrenia. She saw her pride in it being no different from deaf pride. But what really tipped me off was how she latched onto fictional characters with inaccurate depictions of schizophrenia. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac was her Sonic the Hedgehog, and she was creepy enough that not even the JtHM fandom wanted to deal with her, and kicked her ass out. She'd even tried to stalk Jhonen Vasquez online, but that poor bastard is probably used to nutty fangirls, so she was no doubt just another drop in the bucket.

Point is, she loved the idea of having schizophrenia because it provided a cover for her bizarre behavior, it gave her a tragic backstory (people throw rocks at me in the street! My only best friend is a 40 year old man who's in love with GLaDOS! I'm afraid I'm going to kill myself at any time so DON'T EVER SAY ANYTHING TO UPSET ME!). The biggest red flag that she didn't have it was probably that she was extremely manipulative and would lie to people constantly. She only backed down from harassing me when I threatened to get the police involved, at which point she became the most apologetic, simpering ninny on the planet.

I don't know what she's up to now, but I'd hardly be surprised if she was doing the same thing in some other new fandom. she never learns.

I know Risperidone is what made Wesley Willis so fat. You see pictures of him as a young man before his symptoms showed up, and he was a very thin dude.

The "extreme male brain" hypothesis is Simon Baron-Cohen's (yes he's a cousin of that other one). That Wikipedia article calls it a theory but I don't think it meets the definition. It's somewhat more than a wild ass guess, I suppose, but I doubt it captures the complexity of the phenomena at play.
