In all seriousness, Barb and Bob probably did love Chris, but they were completely misguided on how to raise a kid, as evidenced by their constant coddling of Chris which prevented him from becoming a successful adult.

My question is more did he still love Chris when he told him he 'didn't raise no fag,' on his death bed covered in insect bites.

Because he loved him until he realized his dumb son was never going to support himself and once the credit card stealing happened as an adult it was a reasonable question to consider on his feelings about Chris from there to the lumberjack's end.

I think they loved him as all parents are inclined to. But that they were disappointed in him. Bob never understood autism, and pushed Chris to get a real life, go to college, etc. Which would have worked, had they not coddled him every step of the way. In the end, you could just see that Bob couldn't understand what was wrong with his son.

No doubt they would have some love for Chris. Even with the shit they had to put up from Chris, they'd still have a sort of love for him. They would still have disappointment from whatever things Chris has done.

Had they knew on how to deal with autism and not coddle Chris, their son could end up a better person. Even though putting him on the tugboat could be some sort of sign of love for their son, it would just end up in creating more disappointment.

Yes, Bob and Barb loved their son. Bob tried to do what he thought was best for Chris. He was terribly misguided and he had married an emotionally disturbed person who no doubt had awful parenting strategies. Bob really tried to control Chris' formative experiences and protect his son. A lot of this control had a negative effect but it made Bob feel like he was doing all he could for his disabled son. I think moving Chris away from Barb to finish high school and employing a group of friends for him show that Bob was willing to do a lot for Chris, but it had to feel right to Bob. Special Ed scared Bob so Chris didn't get it. They loved their son and wanted to make his life as pleasant as possible, even though the extensive coddling and manipulating turned Chris into an entitled bitchy moron.
