Serious Thailand Discussion - Thai weeaboos are a thing

So, I recently watched an interesting video on what tabletop RPG culture is like over in Thailand. The interviewee (under the pseudonym Nakorn) revealed interesting details about the gamers he's had experience with over the years. For starters, Thailand's geeks LOVE Japan and anime. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. However, Nakorn revealed something that is quite stupid and tragic all at once. Some of the younger gamers unfortunately seem to look upon their culture and traditional stories with seeming disdain in comparison to the worlds of their imagination, as well as glorious Nihon. Throwing away your fucking culture and its cool stories in exchange for fucking Weeaboo-Land to be edgy is not cool.

Also, Thailand's government chooses to censor aired broadcasts of anime and TV with ridiculous smudges over anything considered objectionable (midriffs, underpants, etc).

And criticizing the royal family over there is quite against the law and a moral taboo. On r/5555555 (a fucking Thai circlejerk meme subreddit), you can't even post about the royal family. This means the mods are actually afraid they'll possibly receive a dose of legal action if any post perceived as critical surfaces (or they're just stereotypical jerk Reddit mods).

So, I just want to know what everyone thinks about these issues. Why do you think this phenomenon of listless Thai weeaboos is taking hold? What do you think about Thai censorship and how can a healthy balance between upholding moral values and allowing provocative content be found?

Anime creates epic stories like LoTGH but also creates representations of ideal traditional relationships and power fantasies for autists.

It's not surprising that anime is catching on like wildfire in countries with low birthrates, autocratic governments and countries with alot of autism.

Young people despising their own culture and watching anime seems to be quite global phenomenon by now, nothing strange if it happens in Thailand too. All countries have their own traditions and folk-tales and legendary past and guess what? Majority of young people couldn't be less interested in that shit anywhere. I'm not saying that it's a good thing, personally I'm very much in favor of people being in at least knowledgeable terms with their cultural background and identity, but right now the opposite seems to be the trend. And considering that most of the people who are "innocently" interested in their own cultural identity are usually blatantaly so because it fits some kind of nationalistic or conservative agenda, it tends to paint whole issue of "your own culture" as some kind of agenda of angry, old and bitter people - in other words, losers yearning for regression to past, because they can't cope with the present.

It's almost universally visually appealing. Say what you want about anime design, they've got it down to such a science that random anime faces get adopted for unrelated products and services all over the world.

They should absolutely be afraid. Thailand has been run by a military junta for the last few years that is very pro-royalist and frequently uses the lese majeste laws to bludgeon political dissidents. The term "police state" gets bandied around a lot, but if you visit Bangkok you will see the police glorified and prominent in a way that might surpass anywhere else in the world.

As far as Japanese influence goes, Japan has a massive commercial presence in Thailand and it's not shocking they are rubbing off culturally on them.
