Oh God. I stopped watching after seeing that hideous giraffe creature. I’m not watching anymore ever.

Where have all the good shows gone?
This is really late, but Amphibia is surprisingly good. The characters are fairly well-written and likable, the jokes all land, the setting is fun and interesting, nothing feels token-y or preachy, and the humor is relatively mature (as in the jokes are stuff that adults will find funny too, not Adult Swim-tier humor).

It takes a bit for the plot to kick off and the first season definitely leans more into slice of life (that happens to be set on Catachan Jr.). However, near the end of the first season and all throughout the second it really starts picking up, and because of this it goes from entertaining but simple to genuinely good. It's definitely one of the better shows airing, and it makes me sad that it doesn't get as much love and attention. Though considering the current state of internet fandoms, that might be a blessing in disguise.

It does help as well that Amphibia leans heavily into the sort of cartoon violence that only cartoons can manage (without getting into the gore that adult animated series do). Some of their scenes have felt borderline Warner-esque for the relentless glee being had.

And as you say the lack of attention helps since I have not seen the "x character is this ethnicity and that's why it matters so much!" articles that the Owl House for example is drowning in.

There were a few of those due to Anne being Thai(?) and obviously since Brenda Song was playing her, but that's about it.

Pretty much what I expected then. I knew there would be some but they seem to be few and far between.

I have criticisms of the show but compared to She-Ra where I consider the show as a whole deserving of criticism it's reasonably solid.

I agree. It helps that the show doesn't get as much attention. Which saddly a good thing. Hence why it's remain good

Back in the 2000s we had (for example) Asian-American superhero cartoons like Juniper Lee and Jake Long. Nobody made a huge deal out of it and it was for all children to aspire to. I haven’t noticed many cartoons like that anymore. What gives?

If I had to guess it's due to more people having access to the internet than back then.

Overly “woke” media culture? Cartoons with non-white or non-straight characters don’t seem to get attention anymore unless they play it up to be a social statement, a la She-Ra, Steven Universe, and Owl House.

It’s why the few cartoons that stick to the 90s/2000s style of having characters of different races while being appealing to all children and not making it a big deal end up flying more under the radar. Amphibia and Miraculous are the only current ones that I can think of that fit this mold.

I’m a firm believer that cartoons can be enjoyed by anyone (heck, adults are the ones who create them), but when certain people outside of the target demographic start demanding that it pander to them and their overly online way of seeing the world, that’s when shit goes awry and we end up with things like this.

Ironically, SU's main character (while being camp as a nun's handbag due to being raised by three lesbian space rocks) is both white AND straight. Only ever shows attraction to a biological female. It's a stat I enjoy recalling when comparing modern cartoons.

She-Ra and Owl House are spot on though. From what I've heard, OH does it better.
