I've seen no thread nor discussion on this quirky game from future past, so I'll make one. All turtle racing / lucly hit strats go here. Also, game store drama bullshit and voice acting complaints.

Launch trailer:

Originally released in 1999 in Japan and 2000 in US, Shenmue is a prototype of the Open World genre of video games. It's scale and depth of detail would basically bankrupt SEGA during the Dreamcast era, but it would also pave the way for several generations of free-form exploratory bullshit. Written in the vein of a japanese kung-fu drama, Shenmue's protagonist, Ryo Hazuki, would witness his father's murder, and traverse the underbelly of his hometown for answers. He would continue his quest in mainland China, the walled city of Kowloon, and eventually find his way to the majestic mountains of Guilin, where he would meet some magical girl bullshit and kill the series for ~20 years.

This is the newest installment of the saga. The graphics have changed. The voice acting has not. Let's get sweaty.

So, uh... who wants to play lucky hit?

Official release is tomorrow at 8am, at least that's when US download codes drop. There was a brief scuffle about a review embargo until the 21st, but that was a "mis-communication." Some are already playing the full game on streaming sites. I'll see it for myself in the morning.

Yu Suzuki is a charming old man and I wish him all the best.

I'm not usually the type to buy games on release day, but I'll be grabbing this. Loved the originals, the remasters managed to update the controls and visuals while keeping in all the goofy shit everyone liked. Can't wait to play this, but now I need to finish my playthrough of II so I can.

Isn't the final boss of the original Shenmue just stacking boxes for a couple of hours?

Shenmue is like yakuza right? Could I play this third one without having played the first two? I'm still not sure I understand this genre really, I tried playing the first yakuza and couldn't get into it.

depends why you couldn't get into it, shenmue is slower and more "life sim".
there will probably some form of recap, but since it's one big story having played 1&2 would be a big advantage.

Epic Store exclusivity, although I don't think it was Suzuki's fault.

he had enough business sense to strike a deal with sony for promotion, so "it's not his fault" is hard to believe when deep silver proceeds to go full retard and the handling of the store change was an absolute mess people would never accept for any other game. PR blurbs that mean nothing, zero communication for months without any clarity how things will proceed from now on etc.
I don't even take that shit from kickstarter first timers anymore, let alone an industry veteran or big publishing company.

Just looked at the cast for the game and ugh.....

Aside from Corey Marshall and Lisle Wilkinson everyone is your typical regular voice actor. Dumb.

Casey Mongillo is playing Wong.....🤢.
As an aside it does have some actors that surprised me. Cindy Robinson, Wendee Lee, Cam Clarke, Chris Patton, etc but.....

But on the other hand it's the overused actors, JYB, Max Mittleman, Xander Mobus, Ben Diskin, etc.

Redditors being salty because they don't seem to understand what they paid for, to the point where they've been deleting threads by backers who feel they've been "scammed."

If you paid for a backer physical game, it was $60 plus $10 for shipping. You got a physical copy for your console of choice mailed to you on release day, it wasn't a fancy edition but it came in a cardboard sleeve and maybe with a code for some extra moves or something.

Thing is, if you chose the backer game there was the option to pay more than the $70 if you wanted. Like a "pay what you feel" thing where it all goes to develop the game. Cue redditors getting upset because they chose to pay extra, but got the same exact package as those backers who paid just the $70.

You didn't get scammed. You chose to pay $200 for your $70 package when you didn't have to, you put extra toward making the game and still got your reward. Not exactly a ripoff if you ask me.

The thread that remains after others were deleted:

pretty sure the pc version is just a disc with the epic installer and a number in a "kickstarter exclusive case". it's debatable if that is worth 40 bucks.

which reminds me, aren't the super special kickstarter goodies in the deluxe version with other stuff that was never on kickstarter in the first place?
IIRC the limited run version came with shit exclusive only to that, like the replica engraved mirror, the SE box itself, and a few other prop items as well as an entirely different steelbook case.

No Artbook which was why I didn't get it.
