Shin Godzilla, the most recent Godzilla film, actually did really well in Japan, and Funimation is bringing it to the United States October 11-18. As this is a limited release, I'd recommend checking for tickets in your area ASAP.

Personally I've been excited about this movie for a while. The soundtrack is great, the design for Godzilla looks excellent, and all the clips I've seen and the feedback I've heard give me the impression that this will be a very entertaining Godzilla movie.

They had to bring motherfucking Hideaki Anno, famous from creating that meme machine we call Evangelion to save Godzilla, and according to weebs and people on Twitter, shit is awesome better yet is going to have a Anime film written by Gen Urobuchi, this is a good time to be a Godzilla fan

Anno is a co-director, along with Shinji Higuchi (who did the Attack on Titan live action film). This movie seems like a total win for Godzilla fans in terms of creative talent involved.

But yeah, Evangelion fans are in for a treat. The composer for Shin Godzilla is Shiro Saguso (alongside the famous Godzilla composer Akira Ifukube), who did the soundtrack for NGE. In fact, a remix of Decisive Battle is in Shin Godzilla, which is awesome.

A good film hampered by some irritating flaws, such as a lackluster main cast. Brian Cranston carries the first act, and everything after the HALO jump is wonderful, but the second act is kind of a meandering mess. Main army guy is boring and bland, and we keep cutting to his boring wife and boring child. Everything after Hawaii is something of a blur to me and I've seen the movie twice.

That said, I dug a lot about it. The MUTOs felt like solid additions to the Godzilla universe, I loved the sexual dimorphism, and the scene of them "sharing" the nuclear device was pretty touching. The movie has a lot of really excellent shots, too; I really appreciate how they specifically shot a lot of the scenes to be from positions where humans could be watching (such as through office windows, and using a lot of low angle shots).

Shin's playing near me and I'm way hyped even though the onlines already spoiled everything.

I'll preface this by saying yes, there have been a lot worse Godzilla movies over the years. Like all the bullshit G-rated "Godzilla as a good guy" movies.

That said, I don't care if they ever make a sequel to that. Maybe with a different director, but Godzilla 2014 just left a really bad taste in my mouth. It seemed like every time some interesting kaiju thing was going to happen in that movie, it would cut away to Lt. Whogivesashit on the phone with his wife (who served no purpose). "And then what happened with your dad?" WHO COULD POSSIBLY CARE?

And the stuff with his dad (who, despite Cranston's best efforts, still came off like a zany human character in a Bayformers movie played completely straight), the Bayformers-esque military shots (like did those Halo Drop guys do fucking ANYTHING of note? Did they even have names?), the underwhelming final fight, the inconsistent tone of the film, and all the little bullshit things like the Navy just kind of sidling up to Godzilla while he's travelling and Godzilla being totally cool with it (which is the precise moment where the film lost me). If this film fulfilled even 1/100th of the promise it hinted at with its epic 2012 comic-con teaser, I would have been okay with it. But it didn't and I wasn't.

I don't care that Godzilla was barely in it compared to the MUTOs, Bryan Cranston, and Lt. Whogivesashit. He was barely in my favorite godzilla flick, 1984's The Return of Godzilla. But what they chose to fill up the movie's runtime with left a bad taste in my mouth. It would have been, in my opinion, 1000x better if the film focused both Lt. Whogivesashit and the Olsen Who is Neither Mary Kate Nor Ashley both stuck in Tokyo during a Godzilla/MUTO battle (maybe they were both foreigners who serendipitously met on a bullet train or something, I dunno) and the film would cut back and forth between Godzilla doing Godzilla things and these two humans trying to survive in a foreign country (where they don't speak the language) during this terrible disaster.

Instead, it felt like 50% exposition shit, 25% half-assed family drama, 10% useless shots of the military doing fuck-all, and maybe 15% Kaiju but it feels like I'm being overly generous here. I know I'm arm-chair filmmaking here, but holy fuck, what a missed opportunity 2014 was.

I thought that 2014 Godzilla was okay for the most part. Even though you can barely see shit in the last third thanks to all the nighttime fighting shit, it got me hyped enough, especially when G-man uses his atomic breath. Cranston went for the fucking gold in my opinion and killing him off was the biggest sin in the movie. The film has a LOT of problems (lack of Godzilla-focus, boring lead char, etc) but I think it works as a dumb popcorn flick.

Really excited about Shin Godzilla though. Looks solid.

LOL I remember the theater cheering at Godzilla's first appearance onscreen and again when his spines lit up for teh nuke breath.

Godzilla 2014 had its flaws but at least he wasn't a fucking iguana that died from missile hits. Fuck that shit, missiles should not hurt Godzilla enough to stop him. They piss him off and he kills you end of story.

Just got back from the one-night showing at one of the theaters in my area. It was fantastic, not spoiling anything (unless anyone is dying to know).

I dug it a lot.
I'm incredibly excited, but I don't have tickets until Sunday. I'm glad to be hearing mostly positive reviews (with the negative points I've heard being some wonky CGI and too much talking, both things I can deal with).

The talking is mostly part of a very dark humor look at Japanese bureaucracy's inability to work with a crisis. If you don't pick up on that it just looks like a bunch of people talking about crap endlessly for the first half of the movie. Like if you tried to parse the ark ship from Hitchhiker's Guide as people dealing with a crisis rather than a satire of incompetent people dealing with a crisis.

The CGI is about par for Japanese movies, but when stuff is happening it doesn't stick out particularly.
