The makers of the 2016 surprise hit Shin Godzilla, which was the highest grossing film of 2016 in Japan, is set to return to together to work on Shin Ultraman with Tsuburaya Productions and Toho, who is likely distributing. The movie is set to be released in 2021, which is Ultraman's 55th anniversary.

I liked Shin Godzilla, although I'm not really sure how you can make a story about Ultraman into a film with 2 hours of board meetings.

What I hope this movie won’t be one of those crappy movies they make after they air the shows starting from Ginga to now.

I think this will be a breath of fresh air for many fans who are getting sick of the New Generation Heroes series that rely on using past powers and toy gimmicks because let’s be honest, we haven’t had a traditional Ultra Series since Mebius and that was from 2006-2007.

I'm pretty sure Anno loved the original Ultraman so this will be pretty neat to see him have fun with it. Its cool to see him having his own takes on the two of the biggest media properties in Japan. Also didn't know that they Godzilla was partly a Tsuburaya work. Wonder if a version of Decisive Battle will be thrown in there too.

Yeah, they actually reused some of the costumes from the Godzilla movies of that era for some of the earliest entries in the Ultraman series.

I remember people announcing Anno doing an Ultraman movie as a joke about the last Evangelion movie getting delayed again. I didn't think it was actually happening for real.
