For me yes, because this is really interesting how fans can write a quite diffrent stories, using other people characters/franchise.

You know, reading through this thread just made me glad that even though I've been a part of some pretty shit fandoms (Homestuck, Danganronpa and RWBY come to mind), I am glad I stuck to het shipping- at least there I could just filter out slash tags and avoid the drama (also not super caring about whether or not my ship(s) were canon or not helps). Though its probably a good thing I never brought up the fact I'm a cishet white male.

It really depends on the fandom. IME, the only fans that had drama over ships is Harry Potter and Love Nikki.

Yeah, what I remember about X-files was that some people really enjoyed having a great not romantic dynamic between a single man and a single woman. They really wanted see other options than romantic in tv because men and women are capable being just good friends but in many shows that didn't seem to be an option. They just voiced their concerns about ship going canon, same as those that wanted the ship go canon.

There is a difference between "I prefer this relationship as platonic because I find it cuter, more relatable, makes more sense or less creepy" to "I hate this ship and all other ships like it because shipping like that is homophobic, pedophilic, racist or just plain wrong because I said so". There is nothing wrong with disliking a ship or prefering some other relationship dynamic than romance, just like there is nothing wrong with liking a ship or shipping in general. It's honestly all about how you go about it. Being overly aggressive and emotional asshole is the actual issue, not matter whar you want to happen or not happen in thebedroom

I am absolutely out of my element with this thread, but one of my favorite games from my early teens, Nintendo and Camelot's Golden Sun duology, apparently had a very rampant shipping scene back during its relatively short time as RPG cock of the RPG walk. So much so, in fact, that the de facto main wiki on the series has a page on it, and lists the endless autistic ships and their equally autistic names for each. Not content to be contained to this page, each character's individual page also contains their stats, growths optimal builds, etc. side by side with their most popular ships.

The games were big in their day (bigger than Fire Emblem at the time and larger than Xenoblade is now, when it came to sales) but their fanbase burned bright and died quickly when Nintendo put off making a new one for ten years. Sadly, this means the only remains of this surely-autistic goldmine are a pathetically small Reddit more concerned with their series being represented in Smash than actually getting new games. I will look through a few of the old ghost towns that are Golden Sun forums to see if there are any delicious morsels preserved as lolcow jerky.

I lowkey miss the "homophobic" times of slash when the creators couldn't flat out say the characters were gay and you had to read between the lines, but at least moments like that felt earned.

See, in Young Avengers Vol 1 they only vaguely implied Wiccan and Hulkling were a couple, however, the romance wasn't important to the story, so when the relationship finally got acknowledge with a kiss it felt satisfying.
Compare this to Vol 2 where the whole story (yes, the whole story) was about their relationship drama because the tumblr complained about "queerbaiting" and tokenism, so now Billy and Teddy have to state they're gay every two pages (I wish I was exaggerating). And recently they had to get them married not once but TWICE (just to owe the homophobes, even tho nobody cares). Yes, we get, they're gay, WHAT ELSE IS THERE??
I only got reminded of this because Wiccan appeared in Wandavision (only as a child but shippers are going crazy already.)

this actually reminds me of a debate I was having with a friend recently. the gist of it was in any media that is not romance centred but has a romantic subplot the subplot will usually be a boilerplate B-plot, ending with a kiss. hopefully not detracting from the main story too much. witch is a net positive as romance is often the weakest aspect of any story not expressly about it.

I agree and also wanted to add that it's usually stories where the romance is a subplot and not the main thing that tends to attract many shippers, because the low foccus on romance leaves a lot to the imagination.
There isn't much fuel to the shipping content if the cannon doesn't leave lots of gaps for the audience to fill.

When this gay virtue signaling started to get really bad and dumb my natural reaction was to think how I would do it. How to have a gay super hero couple that where all those elements played natural parts in the story and this what I came up with.

Spoiler: My gay super hero story concept

In the beginning we meet the couple in their downtime from super heroing. We seem them as a couple, they have been together for long time and they are doing pretty good for themselves exept they have one large issue in the background. One of them would love have a kid, he has always wanted be a dad, and the other one is fine with this dream theoretically but he knows the child can't happen. Not because they are gay, although that would add extra steps, but because they are super heroes. They live dangerous lifestyle that would put a child in danger and so responsible choice is not become parents when it's so easy to do so.

Anyway they and their super hero team get called to a mission to this evil science research facility. After some fighting, sneaking and other action they find a creepy little girl who was being experimented on. The team save her but aren't sure what do with her especially when some of the baddies escaped. The wanna be dad immediately jumps and says they take her. His husband pulls him aside and they have talk about their earlier agreement of no kids because it's a bad idea, but other one points out how this actually perfect. The little girl is in danger no matter what but with them she would be in better care than anywhere else. They are super heroes and so can protect her beyond just hiding her. So the husband gives in and they take the girl home.

This sudden change in life style doesn't go smoothly. The creepy girl continues to act creepy at home and generally is a fairly unusual and often quite unpleasant child. They struggle with her, her wierd responses to normal behavior while trying figuring out why she was being researched on and fighting off people trying find and take her. She doesn't seem to have super powers but maybe they haven't manifested yet...

So the actual full story would mostly center around a supernatural mystery and often unspoken struggles in adoption and bonding with an abused child.
