shitty lgbt writing that tries too hard -

I'd say Mercedes Lackey has written some decent LGBT characters, especially in her Valdemar series. The main character in the Last Herald Mage trilogy was gay and while I'd say it definitely was a big part of the story, it blended in perfectly. (Like how he came to terms with it, his family's reaction, etc. Great books, btw)

(Granted I've heard some people aren't too fond of her because she doesn't write about many trans characters in the series, but I'd still reccomend her highly)

The first and last story D&C goes through definately proves this thread's point.
Oh tsk. Can confirm Joe Glass is a fat whiny SJW even in reality and complains about 'people hating the gays in comics!'. He is literally Daffyd Thomas at this point going on about how oppressed he is.

But Jesus. What an awful comic, though at least the interior art is a actually passable in places compared to the first issues of PRIDE. If ever there was someone that needed to be banned from writing women it's him and Bendis.

Throw in Brooke McEldowney and post 9-11 Frank Miller and you got it.

Holy shit. Just read the synopsis:
https://www.amazon.com/Ship-Britta-Lundin/dp/1368003133
It's not even satire or anything, as far as I can tell. It's serious.
Oh dear Lord...

From Riverdale screenwriter Britta Lundin, Ship It is a funny, tender, and honest look at all the feels that come with being a fan.CLAIRE is a sixteen-year-old fangirl obsessed with the show Demon Heart. FOREST is an actor on Demon Heart who dreams of bigger roles. When the two meet at a local Comic-Con panel, it's a dream come true for Claire. Until the Q&A, that is, when Forest laughs off Claire's assertion that his character is gay. Claire is devastated. After all, every last word of her super-popular fanfic revolves around the romance between Forest's character and his male frenemy. She can't believe her hero turned out to be a closed-minded jerk. Forest is mostly confused that anyone would think his character is gay. Because he's not. Definitely not.

Unfortunately for Demon Heart, when the video of the disastrous Q&A goes viral, the producers have a PR nightmare on their hands. In order to help bolster their image within the LGBTQ+ community-as well as with their fans-they hire Claire to join the cast for the rest of their publicity tour. What ensues is a series of colorful Comic-Con clashes between the fans and the show that lead Forest to question his assumptions about sexuality and help Claire come out of her shell. But how far will Claire go to make her ship canon? To what lengths will Forest go to stop her and protect his career? And will Claire ever get the guts to make a move on Tess, the very cute, extremely cool fanartist she keeps running into?
Does anyone remember a comedy film with Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck called In & Out? When an actor wins an Oscar he thanks his former teacher and outs him as gay, which millions of people see on live TV. But this teacher (Kevin Kline) insists he is totally not gay you gaiz. What follows is a whole movie dedicated to showing you just how gay he totally is and then there's an unnecessarily long kissing scene between Tom Selleck and Kevin Kline.

Of course there's no way in hell that this movie could ever be made today. But 20 years ago it was a different story. Yet somehow the similar plot elements from this piece of highbrow literature are totally acceptable and worthy of five stars? It sounds like total fanwank. The author is probably using the fictional Demon Heart TV show and its (totally not) gay character named Forest as a placeholder for some show that refuses to acknowledge her gay ship as canon. And to make it worse the author is a professional screenwriter. Bitch has probably got a really shameful old fanfiction.net account out there somewhere just waiting to be discovered.

As was noted in a lot of the Goodreads review (and maybe in this thread, I don't remember) the whole thing is a stand-in for Supernatural (because of course it is) even going so far as to mirror some real-life convention events and fan theories. It's 50 Shades, only with real people having their names find/replaced instead of Twilight characters.

As far as In & Out goes, it couldn't be made today because it's a comedy that doesn't take the whole issue as an issue at all, and just plays it for laughs (see also: Soap Dish) In [the current year], though, gays aren't an acceptable topic for comedy, so using them for that means you want to gas 6 gorillion of them or something. This is acceptable because it features an interracial lesbian couple and lots of whining about muh homophobia, making it #woke and therefor good by definition. It's the same line of logic that makes Apple a "progressive" company despite all the Chinese slave labor they use.

At the end of this book, the actor Forest kisses his co-star in a long drawn out scene, a lot of focus is put on how good and right it feels and all that jazz.

Then in the next chapter, Forest is dating a chick who he had no positive interactions with through the entire book.

So, this book about how bad and evil queerbaiting is... Queerbaits. It's amazing.

That Demon Heart thing sounds like an absolute nightmare fuel book and a really dumb message to fangirls. 'Your ship is real! You know celebs better than themselves! If you bother real life people with your batshit fanfic you'll get a job on your favourite show!!1'. If hits too close to home like those supernatural fans who ship the brothers together stalking and threatening their families. And the fangirls who sent a GIANT thing of designer cupcakes to the cast of Teen Wolf with their chosen gay ship on them. But also ship the real people.

This shit is fucking weird.

Also

>who knew her hero was so close minded???

You mean the actor who plays the role who probably as a good idea of the character and regularly talks to the writers to understand them is close minded because he doesn't think the character goes to brown town?

That movie was directed by Frank Oz too and now he's getting piled on for not liking the idea of children's puppets being gay...

Sorry to necro, but I wasn't sure where else to put this.
I had a conversation with a feminist acquaintance of mine on a tangentially-related topic, and one thing she mentioned off-hand was that a lot of feminists use gay porn as an end-run around their peities about porn (and sex, in some cases.) In hindsight, that makes a lot of sense: no "pron exploits wamman" if there's no wamman, right? Likewise, a tough, manly man taking charge and having his way with the damsel is oppressive toxic masculinity and muh sore giney... unless the damsel is a dude, in which case all their objections fly out the window.

I think this is connected to a comment that Moe Lane made about the same-sex options in ME3: that they were written for a straight audience. The F/F options are "you like chicks? Me too! Let's hop in the shower" like guys want, while the M/M options are these maudlin hurt/comfort stories that appeal to women. So maybe a lot of shitty LGBT writing is just cheesecake for men and women who are into the idea of two chicks or two dudes.

I’d believe this. Hell slashfic writers used to willingly admit it was what gets them hot. Its when it becomes sanctimonious about it that it hits peak cringy.
