Shows You're Currently Binge-Watching - Because if you have nothing else to do....

I'm surprised there isn't a binge-watching general thread here, especially during these 'rona times.

So, currently, I'm binge-watching Seinfeld and I think that it's pleasantly surprised me. The show's actually really fucking funny. The clips I saw of it before (although maybe it's because I was younger) didn't entice me, but watching the show in full, I feel like I'm laughing constantly, sometimes even rolling on the floor (the whole entire second act with Elaine's father in The Jacket is some of the funniest television I've seen, period). I actually really appreciate the level of effort that went into the writing and direction of the show. Unlike other shows at the time, there was this rather surreal edge to Seinfeld that made it stand out. All of the characters are in some way crazy versions of real people that you know, yet they never feel too cartoony. And a lot of the episodes are experimental in formats by just placing the characters in a normal situation and just letting them bounce off of each other, which makes for better comedy. It's not a corny sitcom that goes for feels, it's harsh and biting and everyone's a fucking asshole to each other. A lot of the things that many shows do nowadays that they constantly falter at (dark humor, surreal stories, cynical characters), Seinfeld did best in the 90's. I can definitely see the hype for this show because holy shit there really was no show like it at the time. It really fucking pushed the edge compared to its competition, even the fucking Simpsons didn't push as far and as hard as Seinfeld. So far, I'm on season 4 where they're pitching "the show about nothing" which generally became a descriptor for Seinfeld as a whole and it seems to be leading its way up to be the best season of the show thus far. I hope I'm not disappointed when I eventually get to the Alec Berg era of the show in season 8.

So, what shows are you bingeing?

I've been watching Fantasy Island (The original 70s series with Ricardo Montalban) somewhat religiously after enjoying the underrated 2020 reimagination.

The very concept of the series lends itself well to the episodic narrative it's structured around. This is good, because I don't have the patience to watch multi-episode stories without changing the channel--unless it's X-files or Twin Peaks.

I have a hard time rewatching Seinfeld, I think it's because of the finale, how every side character told them that they were acting like bullies and know-it-all assholes. Now all I see is a group of assholes.
I'm watching King of the Hill for the first time I fucking hate Peggy and I've started rewatching X-Files and BSG since they're on the Amazon Prime of my region. I'm really impressed by the remastered version of X-Files.

It's not an old show obviously (it just premiered, really) but I missed it at the beginning and am now catching up:

Perry Mason on HBO.

I think it's great, with the only blemish being the "overrepresented gay" that seems to be in everything these days. Two of the five main recurring characters that will apparently continue into next season are gay? Della AND Hamilton Berger? Yeah, ok. Sure 🙄 Other than that....

Conclusion of Season 1 is this week, and it's been really good.

The DuckTales reboot. I found a youtube channel that has all the current episodes up (annoyingly they are like 5-10 minutes most likely so they don't get stricken)

SURPRISINGLY, it's really good. In fact for me it's on par with the "A Mickey Mouse Cartoon" shorts (I.E. where the "Wha Happun?" meme came from). Only thing that irked me a bit was how Darkwing Duck is just a "tv show" and not in the same universe as DuckTales. I fucking LOVE Darkwing Duck, much more than DuckTales.

Just finished Fringe but quit a little into the 4th season. I had forgotten how badly it went off the rails.

About to start Harper's Island. Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians vibe. Intentionally only 1 season as they kill a character every episode. Ran on CBS quite a while back.

I think Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman made a huge mistake by turning the Observers (who were just a Mystery Box) into the main villain.

First time watching King of the Hill, I am now in Season 8. Dear God, I wish Peggy had died in the skydiving accident.
The thing about Peggy is that she's not the typical character that you just don't like, she's a really awful human being. I can't believe they thought that they were writing a cool character. There are a few episodes that are ruined just by her behavior.

Absolutely 100 percent agree. Peggy is the only character I actively root against. Anytime she is knocked down a peg (no pun intended), it makes the episode a million times better.

I seem to be on a scandinavian tv kick, so I'm currently watching Bordertown. Nobel is also very good, but not really bingable with only 1 season.
