Sia has been a sub-par musician and writer for the entirety of her career and her movie about autism is alright at best, regardless of the multiple golden globe nominations, but the reaction from the internet has been predictably irrational. If you guessed pants shitting rage then you were correct.

There were a ton of comments bitching about Lin-Manuel Miranda playing a migrant; literally dozens just scrolling down a few pages. The overall reaction to the film has been strong enough to cause Sia to nuke her Twitter account after apologizing.

Seems like Twitter is kind of on her side at least.


I'm sure no one here is surprised by this reaction but I find the ignorance around autism among these shrieking harpies particularly funny. For all the representation talk no one seems to take poor Harley seriously.

You can see the soul of the mother in the news video slowly dying before your eyes. She wants so badly to have some peace, but she loves her son and doesn't want him to die or get hurt by strangers. Imagine living your entire life being a 24 hour a day caretaker to a kid who will probably never rise beyond repetitive and sometimes violent behaviors. There are people who can have a severely disruptive, disabled child and turn it into a life of dignity and beauty, but the odds of my being one of those people is extremely low. I haven't had any children though, so I don't know far I'd go for them...

Writer/director/producer Sia is taking all the heat, so I think he'll recover just fine.

Besides, he fought for and won a sliver of a Hamilton royalty. Even if he hits a rough patch, he's got a buffer.

Ironically this is pretty much the metaphor that best describes autistic child/autistic child parents relationship, since our low-functioning brethren are terrible at expressing themselves (some don't even speak at all) so parents project their definition of ''polite'' person into their disabled offspring.

The problem is that Maddie is a naive actress who researched videos on YouTube and Gilbert Grape to determine how autism works. Why she lazily did this is probably due to Sia. Sia had mentioned that she really wanted Maddie to be in the film, and that Maddie was nervous because she didn't want to offend anybody.

This could have been done right. Gilbert Grape had a mental disability, and DiCaprio visited a facility full of people with mental disabilities for a few days and lived there to understand them. Dustin Hoffman did the same thing for Rain Man, and worked with the guy the film was inspired by. Etc. Etc. Maddie nor Sia did any of that.

Many people that are really autisitc however more higher functioning going after the movie, however do I agree there is a issue with the self diagnose assholes and they are always the loudest in these type of shitshows and go on to much on the fact they cast someone with out autism in the role rather than the quality of the the acting and of the movie as whole.

Really no defending the movie, really is crazy how badly it fucks up on every level however the fact they cast an none autistic person is really a none issue. Music's tism in the movie is all over the spectrum, but even if they cast someone with mid or high functioning autism it would still have the issue they are complaining about playing something they are not. Plus I doubt any actor who got the role would have told Sia she is wrong even if they knew she was, and if they did would she even listen really doubtful.

There’s an adaptation of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time that’s been in some state of development for over a decade, but, in that case, I would think development hell is the more immediate obstacle than a bad movie on a similar theme.

On one hand, I think it's stupid how people have been screeching about how Sia should have actually cast an autistic person. If the person has low functioning autism, then casting a person of the same condition would be ... Exploitive at best. And also damn near impossible to direct.

On the other hand, though, this movie does send out dangerous messages on how to "deal" with autistic people. The movie genuinely gives dangerous advice. That's where I have a big problem.

Either way, the movie looks like cringe that was made by an out-of-touch celebrity who thought she was making something revolutionary. LOL. It's always pretty hilarious when that happens.
