To be honest, I didn't watch the movie yet so they might have a point as far as I know. However, it's noted in an interview that the friendship between the two lead characters is inspired by the creator own experience as a child which is why I doubt there's any intentional romantic subtext between the two boys. Honestly, I wouldn't mind some puppy love between two kids characters of the same sex but the way these people talk about it often feels too sexual. In a comment on the video I linked, someone quoted the character being told to not put things in his mouth as a proof that he's gay.

I watched the movie and it's pretty clear that Luca and Alberto (the two boys) aren't gay, just friends.
