There are two types. One type knows fully well that they are overreading into things but do it anyway because it's fun. They aren't confused by male friendship at all, they just take the excuse to see the romance there because it's hot, cute, dramatic or humorous.

The other type is actually true believer and they either don't get male frienships or choose to ignore it for their fantasy. This type will not only overread but will overreact if their reading is challenged. Only sweet pure boy love will do.

Yeah, the creator of the show, Dana Terrance fought Disney tooth and nail to get actual representation on TV, not like the minor gay character in every Disney movie that gets censored in China.

Some people have theorized the third season getting cut down to three two-parters was because Disney disapproved of all the gay stuff they couldn't censor.
