Its kind've a half truth. Some slave owners were better to them than others, but at the end of the day they were still slaves. With pressure coming from free states, the southern culture largely adapted to treating them like family members for optical purposes and to feel better about it. I'd imagine there were a good deal of families that did feel this way too, but there were still plenty of them that were whipping and raping them. I know Ive heard cases where some slaves didnt want to leave because they didn't have anywhere to go or have any idea of what to do. While I'm sure there will be people that claim that was all just southern propaganda, I think it probably was true at times for freed slaves who had been treated well by their masters and had no direction. At the end of the day slavery wasn't necesarily a practice where every black was beaten raped and threatened constantly, but there were many who were, and they had no way to escape it. Even if they had tried to establish humane standards of treatment there would be no way to check and enforce it given the limited technologyt and communication of the era, and the blacks still had no real choice of what to do with their lives when they were slaves. Slaves were property, and I'd imagine like any other piece of property there were some owners who tried to take care of them to improve their longevity and function, while there were others who worked them to death because they would just get a replacement when they broke.

If your slaves are mentally broken down, you can trust them in more and more places because they're too afraid to self actualize in case they get beaten or lynched.

If I'm wrong how come early jewish feminists who were descendants of slave owners and slave dealers told gullible white women that being a housewife and mother was beneath them; it was slavery, mocking them, using shaming language which they know works on most women really well. Slavery was only economically viable in industries where a slave could be reasonably expected to work the same job for their entire life time. They were expensive. If you spend $300 (roughly about $10k today) on a slave and a week later a rock fell on him and killed him, You were fucked. That's why they were mostly used on farms and plantations.
