huh. when I'm on snopes, i do the tv tropes method: avoid X(political stuff) and just read Y (everything else)
When someone complains about liberal bias, they typically mean "their facts interfere with muh buhleefs". They forget all the rumors that Snopes dispelled about the Bush administration.
I use it to debunk panic chainmails ('THEY RAPE/KIDNAP/MURDER IN X-PLACE, PASS IT TO WARN THE OTHERS') and other viral shit that I see on my tumblrdash sometimes, it's good for this.
I have it on hot-key for whenever I see some conservative/vegan/antivax/assorted meme bullshit on my FB or Tumblr.
I just like saying "Snopes confirmed it!"
I like reading the creepy/horror section, because I am a sick, sick man.
That site is fabulous. One if the few true 'No Bullshit' zones of the internet that has quietly been determining what is and isn't true for going on twenty years now. They even go back and edit entries whenever any new developments come to light. You have to admire them, really.

I think the completely erroneous view of them as a "liberal" site is because most of their early stories were about utter bullshit stories about Bill Clinton that were circulating in email chains, mostly forwarded by some dumb elderly relative.
I have seen many of these bullshit stories recycled, word for word, and hauled out again for Obama.
Your crazy uncle would forward every one of these. You would debunk them. They were either patently untrue, couldn't possibly be true, or otherwise ludicrous. I seriously think there's a mental defect with people who do this over and over again.
After a few times, most people I knew started actually fact checking things before forwarding them, because they learned this lesson that the strange things the computer was telling them were not always true. But there is always that one dipshit.
Like a lot of the great Web 1.0 sites, the Mikkelsons started their "factivism" on a Usenet newsgroup, alt.folklore.urban. A lot of the early shit on the net worth anything was from that newsgroup. Incidentally, they were sometimes criticized then for being "right wing" because they were too cautious about calling bullshit on things. They don't put that big red false thing on a claim unless they are damn sure about it.
I seriously defy anyone claiming they're "biased" in some way to come up with some actual facts they're wrong about. I'm sure you can find some opinions you don't like. I can too. But hard, solid facts you can wrap your arms around. Get started.
The site isn't terribly active these days. I kind of wish it was. Because this kind of denialist bullshit is now rampant on the left.

I don't always visit Snopes, but when I do, I like it.
