So, Akira's live action remake's synopsis just came out. -

  • Intermittent Denial of Service attack is causing downtime. Looks like a kiddie 5 min rental. Looking into some solutions.

So it's shit? What a shocker!
If they're changing the setting, then why are they keeping the Japanese names?
Pandering to American diversity advocates who want ethnic diversity, but don't like linguistic diversity (i.e. watch a film in a language that's not English) because it forces them to watch something with subtitles

Ugh. This is my issue with this.

If they want diversity, then why not make this super fucked up world where the continental plates have crashed into one another or something and there's a super city like Megacity 1, or have this large nation state built off the coast of California? Even better yet if they want US cultural relevance then why not Boston or Washington DC?

For all of this want of diversity in sci fi they show the absolute lack of imagination to even warrant this.

Also, when has NYC ever been relevant as of lately? Outside of cultural and business importance to the US, you'd think they'd go with LA or somewhere in California for that's where all of the dangerhairs live.

My least favourite thing about American/Western "re-imaginings" of Japanese media is that the influence of WW2/Hiroshima and Nagasaki are completely ignored. It's an examination of post-war Japan's collective psyche, and that aspect is lost when you try and place it in an American setting, or any setting for that matter.

Wasn't the destruction of Tokyo literally just Akira teleporting?

If I wanted to see New York destroyed there's going to be like 10 Marvel movies featuring that this year.

I recall it was also due to Akira exerting his psychic stress onto the world in the wake of one of his friends dying by the crossfire, and this was able to cause a massive rift in the time space continuum. I read the manga; I had the movie but due to the cruelness of life I lost my copy and got too busy.

That's my other thing with this remake. Why the fuck hasn't America done anything with its post WWII war societal angst? There's a fucking ton to work with. Then again, I always blame the excesses and society back to its shortcomings as well regarding this. Don't fucking flag me as some dumbass self hating cultural cringe dumbass, but I can outright say by use of a comment elsewhere: "America is like a huge baby who needs their happy blanket." I guess the people are okay with the propaganda movie industry commercialism machine known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Damn straight.

I love it when every - fucking - movie is trying to preach diversity, yet every - fucking - movie is in the United States, and more often than not in fucking New York in the Man-motherfucking-hattan. Even when the original work was as far away from there as fucking possible.

I know, it's hard to be diverse with films when your progressive ass only knows English and reading subtitles is hard and represents patriarchy or something. I used to be insulted that filmmakers dumb down movies and shows but I've learned a lot about the audiences since then.
