I know it's an autistic thing to ask about but I was just wondering what the reasoning was. It just seemed odd to me.

They were removed in favor of Community Watch.

They were originally implemented to distinguish between individuals and groups. After Community Watch was implemented they were seen as superfluous.

It's not the tags they're talking about, it's the descriptions in the title. For example, Brianna Wu's thread used to say GOTY Gamergate Developer Extraordinaire or something along those lines and Brad Watson's said he was Jesus Christ/Albert Einstein Reincarnated. Several of the lolcow forum titles have been edited to remove everything but names/aliases. I assume they're probably testing out something that was discussed here.
