I hate what became of this term. The ability to identify the types of things it described is helpful, especially when looking at the ways in which male vs. female directors shoot the same types of scenes, but instead it's become a catch all for "This movie has a pretty lady who is shown to be sexy. MALE GAZE!"
One example off the top of my head is Mitchiko and Hatchin (which I love). I've seen people say this show exemplifies "the male gaze in anime" but
1. It was directed by a woman
2. The female characters are better written than any western animation I've seen in years

Cinema class is meant to introduce people to the abundance of great movies, and discussions about what makes them great. It is meant to turn them into even bigger film buffs than they already were. It is not a hard task: any enthusiastic guy into movies could do it and let the movies do the heavy lifting. And here we have people fucking it up due to being unbearable misery merchants. Amazing.
It proves once again that the average Joe or Jane could get something better than this kind of "college" education by just watching something like Roger Ebert's top picks and reading a few books ordered from any big store. Hell, you could just download all the great movies and literature you need, and get a better education than the people who go to college to get gay, learn to hate their family and society, and get saddled with lifelong debt.
If I had to start over, I'd just learn a good trade to pay the bills, maybe some basic business and economics, and get my education in classics on the side. The shit they teach people now is not worth paying for. It is not nothing, it is actively worse than learning nothing.

Film theory is like any other analysis within the humanities. Male gaze is one of many many interesting ways to look at media. But, it is no more interesting or *true* than any other thought exercise.
For example I remember watching this documentary on HBO a long time ago, it was about kid athletes. Kids ranged from 7 on up. It was interesting to watch from a male gaze perspective, because the camera choices...none of the boys of any age and none of the very young girls got this treatment, but every one of the girls over the age of 12 was introduced with that long, leisurely “start at the feet and pan slowly up over the body before coming to rest on the face” shot. That is the gaze part, it has to be about the way the camera is replicating the human eye and the choices made there. Not general “muh exploitation” but very specifically what the camera tells us is important to look at, and how we should be looking.
What we have lost is an understanding that a thought exercise doesn’t arrive at conclusions, much less demand that all other thought exercises stop forever.
Anyway this is why I now understand that the majority of the public just cannot handle ambiguity. You give them a way of thinking about a thing and instead of being like “cool, a new way of thinking about a thing to join the other hundred ways I have of thinking about things, and which will surely lead to more cool new ways of thinking for me to discover,“ they think “great now let’s shut down all other ways of thinking forever and make this one way which I am now the sheriff of the law, and so I will destroy anyone who wants to discuss the issue.”

Couldn't have put it better myself, man. This to me is the single biggest argument against a unified white culture. The most notable thing that white people have in common is a propensity towards white guilt, often disguised as self-deprecating humour but really just the woke whites trying to drag the rest of white people down with them, and it needs - needs to stop.
