I'm not actually getting any error codes, so I can't tell if it's a 500 or 503 that's to blame, but the forums keep "stalling" (ie. loads so slowly it times out often).
Anyone know what's up with that? Increased traffic? DDoS? Maintenance on the host end?

This is a very popular website for the server it runs on, I believe. See, what happens every time you click a page is that the PHP behind the server needs to hit a database, pull out stuff like users, usernames, post contents, dates, etc and then format them in HTML before sending them to you. The pages aren't stored as HTML that's read right off the disk, they're dynamically generated, which takes CPU time on the server slice and is why the site appears to be slow at times. It's the same reason your own desktop computer slows down at times.

The only way to fix that is to allocate more CPU time to this forum's share of the server. That costs a lot of money. So if it bugs you that much, I would suggest you ask Null about setting up a donation drive so everyone could chip in.

As a site builder, I would find lag like this entirely unacceptable for blogs, web applications, or any other service I'm providing to users. But this is just a forum about a pants-shitting retard on welfare. It's not designed to generate revenue. So it's really not worth the cost to get rid of the problem, which doesn't bother me to begin with, keeping these things in mind.

Been happening to me as well a bit recently. It seems like if you refresh/reload the page, though, it works fine.

Also Null, what you can probably do to optimize what we have to work with is try a PHP accelerator (if that's even an option with phpBB), extend the minichat poll time, and maybe move minichat off the home screen.

Also try memcache extension for phpBB if you have memcached (no typo) installed on your server, that will reduce the amount of time it hits the database. Basically, Chris' most popular threads stay in memory for longer so you don't have to hit the database every time a popular thread is received. This of course requires a lot of memory though.

These are fairly complicated measures that may not even be worth the effort or compromise but I'll toss 'em out there.

I am constantly raising the memory limit. Everything Katsu has mentioned involves shifting information from the mysql db to the memory.

There is an extremely serious issue with Dreamhost and im getting very pissed off.

The last 404 error was me dragging the entire website folder into another website folder.

Why the fuck doesn't that throw an error? "Hey dumbass you're about to pull some inception shit with your directory structure. Proceed?"
