Moot, then a 15 year old, made an english clone of a japanese imageboard and iirc advertised it on SA's anime subforum ADTRW(Anime Death Tentacle Rape Whorehouse).

Remember that SA wasn't always a social justice "No Fun Allowed" site.

Also from what I remember, though I was never sure if he was serious, he said that the site ran on a cluster of Mac Minis, he came out with this after about a month of sporadic outages that he claimed were the result of an OS upgrade.

4chan was originally advertised on SA a day before the site went online as a replacement for some anime images megathread that the SA mods axed to cut down on anime posters back when they cared about that kind of thing.

the english speaking population of the board which inspired moot to create 4chan were mostly ADTRW posters as well.

it really wasn't very independent from its SA roots until /b/ became random and the site started cultivating its own culture.

ADTRW had a thread dedicated to 2chan/the Japanese internet. 2chan hated those fuckers and their inability to speak Japanese on their Japanese website and so banned non-Japanese IP addresses. It probably also cut down on bandwidth back when that mattered, I guess. The solution was for those old ADTRW posters like moot, Snacks and Shii to make and use 4chan. It really did come out of ADTRW, it wasn't a coincidence that moot posted on SA. Most of those people were eventually banned on SA due to FYAD trolling the Azumanga Daioh! thread, not due to them actually being pedophiles.
